Why you should read it: With The Sandman, Neil Gaiman did more than just create a classic graphic novel series; he created a whole new mythology, uncannily applicable to just about every other fictional universe imaginable.* But this story -- comprised of seven vignettes, each one a meeting with a different one of the Endless -- does the crossover so beautifully and deftly, I was beyond impressed. Following Ianto chronologically through his life, from his days at TW 1 through the end of Series 1/ DW Series 3, each brief vignette stands on its own, while gently pulling the reader (and nice, ordinary, broken Ianto) forward to the next one, from meeting Destiny all the way through to Death. And it's a lovely exploration of TW canon as well, giving me an 'Aha!' moment at almost every turn, as the introduction of the Endless seems to explain so much. Every single character shown from both canons is adeptly, lovingly portrayed while the story's dreamlike, haunting quality with its slight hint of dark, erotic undercurrents -- never overtly displayed, but pulsing underneath -- is both disquieting and really gorgeous.
*While Gaiman isn't a fan of TW [though he *does* seem to watch it], he's been a huge fan of Doctor Who from his childhood on, so much so that we may be seeing an episode penned by him in the upcoming series 5! Certainly, there's a case to be made for the crossover-capabilities of Gaiman's oeuvre and the Whoniverse in particular.
