Tiger gets his first Laptop -- Hello 21st Century!

Jul 06, 2009 20:15

July 4th weekend was pretty uneventful.  With all of my friends either planning or actually going out for various parties and the likes, I pretty much stayed at home the whole weekend.

One big thing that happened was that I decided to get a laptop.  I'd like to be able to watch movies, listen to music, go to WiFi spots, do Open Canvas, Photoshop and CorelDraw on the fly.  I don't plan to do 3-D rendering, or play graphic-intensive games (no WoW, CoH, Star Wars, 2nd Life, or the likes.)
I decided to go with an Acer for $480.  After doing some research on what a Photoshop machine needs, it seems to have everything they suggest (except for the 1333 FBS, but 800 will be fine, it suggested.) and I'm not impressed with the 5200 RPM hard drive (I'd prefer 7200), but I'll survive. If I ever decide that I need a laptop designed FOR photoshopping as a business expense and such, I'll look into a much more powerful machine... but as long as the laptop functions as it should, I think it'll be a good deal for what I'm paying and function how I want it to.
I've talked to a few folks who have Acers and they've been pretty happy with them.  Other folks who've had issues say that those problems have shown up within a year.  I have an extended warantee so it's covered for 3 years though.

It doesn't have some perks (that I know of) like a carying case, or docking station, but I think that I'll survive. :)

I put the order in on the 4th and it claimed 3-7 day delivery.  I was happy with that.  Then after purchasing, it said it could be 7-10 working days to be processed and delivered.  That kinda sucked. But up until about 9am today, it was still pending my credit card authorization.  I was starting to get nervous because... what if they waited until Tuesday to authorize the purchase?--would it then be 7-10 working days after THAT?  Then suddenly this afternoon the billing information was received and then the box was scanned... coming from Chicago in 3-7 day ground shipping? It could even arrive tomorrow, if not Wednesday.  We get a lot of ground-shipping at our shop from Chicago next-day with ground shipping AND it's being delivered to our shop, so it's on a regular route!  So, it's *possible* that it could arrive tomorrow, but I'm guessing it's still more likely to arrive on Thursday.

So.. yeah.  Sometime shortly I'll have my (first) laptop and I'll see where I go from there.

... my software savy friends, I may be calling on you shortly. ;)

**EDIT**
Well, it seems that it is on time to be delivered on Tuesday.  It shouldn't be surprising since we get deliveries from Chicago next-day at the shop every day. :)  Here's to the hope that tomorrow I'll be sittin' with Matt at some WiFi location, doing installs, uninstalls and registrations.
