How Much is Too Much?

Hello all. An issue has been brought to the attention of the mods, and I would just like to make a brief post about it. I know mod posts are not the most fun, but this is something that will hopefully help the community to run a bit smoother ( Read more... )

Calling Jaslene a tranny is an insult to trannies, and I mean that both humorously and seriously.

On a completely serious and more practical note, I would just ask the mods to be equally pro-active and diligent about other offensive statements. I haven't seen homophobia here (probably due to the large number of gay men who post here, including myself) but I have seen some racially/culturally insensitive and other downright offensive comments that should have been handled as firmly as you're handling this issue.

Lastly I would just ask that the mods put this announcement in the FAQ or the community rules - since the community is so active there's a good chance a lot of people will miss this notice, especially people who join the community in the coming weeks as the cycle progresses.

Anyway thanks for the great work guys.

You are ALWAYS welcome to point out anything like that to us on this post. With a community this large, some things like that do slip through the cracks, so we appreciate it when people bring them to our attention.

major applause, both to you for noticing and wanting the slurs out and for the mods who make sure it happens

Well, it's not a slippery slope if you distinguish between the careers people choose and the bodies/cultures they are born into. ;) I think most people understand that things people choose - like their political beliefs, what they wear, etc. - are fair game for criticism, whereas attacking people for things they did not choose (e.g. gender, race, heritage, culture, genes, sexual preferences) is normally offensive.

Well, yes, for some John Doe to ridicule your support for gay marriage would be unfortunate, but any person who ridicules that choice is doing so because they clearly believe that it's okay to bar homosexuals from certain rights because of a sexual preference *that they were born with*. I know it's a subtle distinction, but In that case what makes J. Doe's ridicule offensive is not the fact that he criticizes your personal political views, but the fact that he judges homosexuals for something biological as opposed to their actions or their characters ( ... )

No, because being too thin or too fat often times is related to medical conditions or psychological conditions, as well as class issues (e.g. the fact that poor urban neighborhoods often don't have enough grocery stores to serve them but more than enough cheap fast food establishments and liquor stores).

This could go on all night, and I'm stopping right here. ;) You gave some examples but none of them are indicative of a slippery slope if you dig deeper into each one. I stand by what I said - criticizing people for their choices, is not the same offensive action as criticizing them for who they are.

*rofl* And I haven't done much with it, I'm afraid. It's hard to feel motivated to update when Chanticleer itself doesn't really make much news of its own. I will be doing something with it soon though.
