Good thing these TV series things come out on DVD. Otherwise I'd be super-pissed at a show I looked forward to every week suddenly taking 3 months off & sharing the time slot. Holy crap, how do you build a consistent audience that way?
Anyways, there's an awesome half an hour "Docuventary" feature on the DVD set for Season 3, with everyone's favourite, Greg Grunberg, hosting. Without that little featurette, I was ready to be kinda dismissive of JJ's storytelling abilities for the second time
this week. However, now I know why he did the whole "3 Months Later" thing. At first I thought it was just lazy storytelling *cough* paralyzedguywalkingsuddenlyafterfouryears *cough* but I was wrong this time. It was because of the mid-season replacement / hiatus crap they did. I was going to make a big deal about JJ's 3rd season curse (Alias), but it wasn't justified & it would've just been nitpicking.
I thought it was odd that the relationship that was explored the most was between Shawn & Megan (my favourite couple), being that they're supportive characters. But they took the ball & ran with it & turned out to be the most consistently entertaining characters on the show.
Unless, of course, you count Leon / Noel (Scott Foley). I find it somewhat hard to believe that Leon got into a weirder club scene than Megan, but I guess that's what happens when Ms. Dorito, Ali Landry is your pseudo-wife. Fuck, did Noel ever go through the JJ Wringer in the third season. Gave up school & got married, tried to get his marriage annulled (twice), went back to school, became a supernerd, used a hot girl's (Tyra Banks) email account to stalk her, found out he still had feelings for Felicity while working on an Internet cartoon thing with her, left for a job in Seattle, & came back because the Internet died. There's a window Noel Crane, try not to jump out of it.
Amy Jo Johnson (Julie) left the show due to personal reasons, but that was alright because there was only so much pain you could put that character through. Ben's alcoholic father came to visit him & it turned out it was a creepy John Ritter. Who knew? Elena was proposed to by Tracy in the season finale, after making him forsake his God earlier in the season to have sex (both religion & sex are overrated).
Ben (Scott Speedman) kept his angry character going, which corresponded well with all his sweet moments. They should make a drinking game based on his character. If Ben greets someone with a quiet "Hey" accompanied by a sheepish grin, CHUG mother fucker! I'm just bustin' his chops, he's cool.
There was a storyline early in the season involving the new Brit roommate & her druggie boyfriend that was very real life. But, when the show came back, they were just tying up all the loose ends from that. Javier was awesome as usual, & Ian Gomez is a tremendous actor. When you see him in the featurette, wow, completely different person.
For Futurama fans, when Javier goes into the hospital & Felicity has to manage Dean & Deluca, the repairman that comes to the shop (John Dimaggio) is the voice of Bender. Now you (& I) know what he looks like onscreen. Uh.. yay?
I don't mention Felicity (Keri Russell) that much, because while she is the title character, it didn't seem so much that everything revolved around her in the third season. It was more like, yeah yeah Felicity, that's great, but WE have our own problems you know. Stop analyzing everything dammit, or we'll be like Sally & just stop sending you tapes.
Oh yeah, & was it just me, or was Teri Garr's relationship therapist, like, the worst one ever? Or was that the joke?
EDIT: I just checked out
trivia for the Felicity series at IMDB, & I learned that Felicity's haircutting was written into the show, not a personal decision by the actress Keri Russell as I had been informed.
