Basic chapter summaries

[ Personality ] :
Largely thanks to his traumatic and tragic past, Kanda has brought himself up to be a very closed individual with few friends within the Black Order. It isn't so much that he's entirely isolated so much that he has a deep, deep distrust for most human beings, particularly adults, and that by nature tends to cause him to hold everyone at arm's length. It's commonly said that Kanda is a cold and uncaring person due to this great distrust of others-- however, he's been shown to provide a very twisted, limited form of sympathy through distraction at times when it really matters, such as taunting Lenalee when she was afraid of Louvier after the Black Order moved locations. He's more likely to express his sympathy by pissing someone off rather than being comforting-- giving them a distraction and a way to vent out their problems on an external source.

He throws himself into his tasks with the dedication and focus a college student writing a term paper would envy, going so far as to letting himself be killed-- multiple times, thanks to his regeneration abilities-- for the sake of his missions. A particularly notable example of this is shown in the battle with Skin, one of the Noahs that control the Exorcists' enemies, the Akuma. Kanda “dies” four times during the course of the fight, once out of ignorance, once at the end, and twice by careful planning. Thanks to his regeneration, he also tends to be fairly reckless, rushing into dangerous situations and risking everything without a second thought.

Even before the tragedy in is past, however, Kanda was always a very bitter, cynical, arrogant and blunt person. The number of friends he has he can count on one hand, and the number of people he actually likes is fewer than that. The current total of people he likes is at 2, one of which he believes is dead. Really, most sincerely dead, seeing as he thought he killed that person himself. The other person is Lenalee, whom he's described in the drama cds as being “like a sister”. In his interactions with her, it's shown that he's more than just a coldhearted bastard-- he does care, at least enough to listen to her problems and berate her a little for them. Just enough to pull her out of her self-pity for awhile, but nothing more. However, to everyone else, he doesn't seem to be concerned over their problems at all, if they don't affect him or his mission. In his and Allen's first mission together, he even abandons him to fight the enemy alone, knowing he'd probably either get killed or at least badly injured, for the sake of protecting the Innocence they came to get, callously telling his partner that it's his fault for rushing in head-first in the first place. But as soon as Allen's mental state starts to jeapordize the mission, Kanda yells at him that he “hates guys who can't keep a promise” even worse than the naïve person he sees Allen to be. (Allen had promised to protect a pair of people, but had failed to stop the level 2 akuma they were fighting.) This brusque comment gets Allen up and fighting again, to show his worth-here, again, Kanda shows his slightly more supportive side, even though it's highly disguised under vast amounts of animosity.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Strengths & Skills:
  • Regenerates injuries incredibly quickly, including severed limbs and can come back to life in about 6 minutes after being killed.
  • Abnormally high physical strength
  • Can live on very little
  • Has a holy weapon (Mugen) imbued in his sword with the following abilities:
  • First illusion: A slash in the air releases a swarm of insects to devour his foes.
  • Second illusion: Kanda coats his sword and scabbard-if he has it-in energy, creating an illusion sword copy of Mugen for duel-weilding. A subset of the second illusion is an eight-slash attack that appears to leave a trace in the shape of an 8-petaled lotus.
  • Third illusion: Comes in steps. Initially, Kanda activates the power in his tattoo, allowing him to tap into his own life reserve for extra power in strength and speed. Then, if Mugen should break, he can reconstruct it for one very powerful slash. With his life reserve tapped, he can also use an attack that creates a series of small explosions, known to take down even Level 4 akuma-which otherwise require multiple generals to take down. This skill is also usable in Fifth Illusion style.
  • Fourth illusion: Seems to be a suped up variant of Third Illusion. Little is known, since when it is used in canon, it's quickly replaced by Fifth Illusion.
  • Fifth Illusion: For those who've seen Dragonball Z, this is essentially Kanda's super saiyan mode, coming at the cost of a great amount of his life reserve. His hair turns to a light shade of purple and stands up straight, and Mugen shifts shape into a small butcher knife with wings on the hilt, last seen in the manga in Kanda's childhood, at the end of the flashback. It grants him incredible strength and speed, and allows him to only feel anger. Mugen also seems to emit large quantities of electricity. A subset of this style is an attack that sends out several large energy beams.
Weaknesses:
  • As mentioned, many of Kanda's skills take from his own life to use.
  • He only eats soba, tempura, and tea.
  • He has next to no social skills.
  • He doesn't read affection well. If someone's got a thing for him, he's oblivious.
  • He's a bit of an idiot. The order of intelligence with the four main charcters goes Lavi, Lenalee, Allen, and then Kanda. He's not stupid, but he IS a bit of a moron.
  • Most of his skills require him to have mobility. He's not so good in constrained areas.

[ Other Important Facts ] :

  • Due to his peculiar birth, Kanda sees lotuses everywhere he looks. It doesn't seem to affect his behavior or personality or fighting skills, rather being symbolic rather than serving a function.
  • He likes very little, including soba, tempura, tea, fighting, and reading. It can be said generally that he dislikes everything else.
  • It's canon that his hobby is gardening. Headcanon is that he likes it because plants don't talk.
  • Headcanon says that if he ever actually seriously tried, he'd be good at cooking.
  • He has a lot of discipline, and largely follows the same routine from day to day.
  • Headcanon says that he's an early riser. Early to bed and early to rise and all.
  • He sometimes trains himself with a blindfold over his eyes.

[ Sample ] :

It was just another normal morning at the Order. Kanda could hear that idiot beansprout two tables behind him, eating like there was no tomorrow. So disgraceful. He kept his back to the rest of the people in there, at the same time a rejection of company as a sign of trust. He knew none of these people would come and stab him in the back.

He was secure enough to even get lost in his thoughts, one hand supporting his chin against the table, the other securely curled around his tea. The soothing, familiar smell of soba and tea mingled in front of him, putting him in a slight, familiar daze as he considered his last battle with a Noah some weeks ago now. His performance, he decided, had been less than exemplary-at least he got the job done, taking Skin down with him.

So he'd died four times in that fight. It wasn't that big of a deal. He only had to live long enough to find that person-that one person.

He...wasn't sure what he'd do then. It depended on how much time he had left, he supposed. He knew that kind of thinking would earn him a scolding from at least two of the other Exorcists-Lenalee, for sure. Possibly General Tiedoll.

But in the end it didn't matter. From the day he was “born” he was doomed to walk this path. And walk it he would, head held high. He was raised in this environment-a cheerless place whose sole purpose was a holy war that he didn't quite believe in. Kanda could care less about preserving the faith of other people. Destroying the akuma, and the Noahs, and the Earl-that was his purpose.

He supposed he should have some sort of dream of what comes after they “won” the war. He guessed it would be something like finding that person and never leaving their side until the end.

But he knew his end would come fast. Mugen, his beloved sword, was almost as much a parasite as that damn beansprout's left arm. It had fed so much on his life force already, he didn't expect to outlive the war itself, let alone survive any “afters”.

So it didn't matter. Thinking about it would just drag him down, lose his focus. Distract him from his goals.

Destroy the enemy. Find that single person, out of all others.

Everything else... Everything else was entirely irrelevant. He was a destroyer, nothing more.

Even so... I want to be a destroyer who saves.

“Tch... stupid beansprout.” The unbidden, entirely unwelcome memory sprang into his head like it was waiting for him to turn his thoughts to it. He scowled at his now empty plate, grip tightening minutely on his cup. Serene moment gone, he got up and took his dishes back before stomping off to train.

There was no such thing as a destroyer who “saves”. Only naïve idiots who thought they could be both.
