New York Trip - Day 1

Dec 01, 2008 09:56

In the interest of recording experience (what LJ is about, after all), I'm late-blogging my trip to NYC two weeks ago. Enjoy the play-by-play (pun intended), or skip it thanks to the magic of LJ-Cut. For those who want the un-narrated slideshow, check out pix at our Nov 2008 album, starting on page 4.

So every year my mother-in-law (a pediatric nurse practitioner, hereafter MIL) travels to New York for a medical conference. Each year she takes one of her children. Last year was bozini's turn, and they had a real blast. So they decided this year I could get in on the junket, and that my elder son Miguel would come too. So that's what we did.

Tuesday morning we got up at 4 AM to catch a 6 AM red-eye to New York. bozini dropped us at the airport, which meant rousing both children, dressing them, and heading to the airport. needless to say, this took longer than we planned and we got to the airport with just enough time to get through security and run to our already boarded plane. On the plane, Miguel and I talked excitedly about what we would do and see. Also I snoozed a bit - we'd gotten no sleep! But we did wake up in time to see the Manhattan skyline and Lady Liberty from the air.

We landed to find MIL waiting for us at the gate, as her plane landed just before ours. We got our luggage and took a cab into Manhattan. After dropping off our luggage at our hotel, we went across the street for breakfast at Junior's. Miguel had a sensible bowl of strawberries

While I had some lovely blintzes

And we had to have the cheesecake (so much so that the picture took secondary precedence to digging in)

Since we had some time to kill before we could check in, we wandered Times Square hitting some of the big stores. There was Toys 'backwards R' Us (they have a Ferris Wheel in):

The Hershey Store:

And the theater district:

After a bit, we went and checked in to our hotel. Our room was on the 39th floor, so we had a great view:

Once we were settled in and unpacked, we headed right back out to do some window shopping:

And had an early supper at Ellen's Stardust Diner, where the waitstaff all sing standards and showtunes throughout your meal:

Then it was back up 39 stories for a short nap before that night's show. Did I mention the elevators were all glass, on a central column?

Did I mention I'm a little afraid of heights?

Anyway. We got up and got ready at 6:45 to go catch Wicked. We needed to pick up our tickets by 7:30 for the show at 8:00 - or so I thought. Turns out the show started at 7:00 and we arrived 15 minutes late :P. But we didn't miss too much and got seated right away. Miguel really enjoyed the show, as did I. He fell asleep in the last 10 minutes, though - well past his bedtime on a regular night, and we'd spent the day traveling and walking.

Back to the hotel we went for a good night's sleep. to get ready for the next day's adventure.
