The Austin Chronicles

On my way down to Austin, we stopped at a seemingly typical rest area in Indiana. It had the restrooms, the vending machines, the maps- all the usual suspects of a highway rest area. It also had a giant metal hershey kiss shaped building sitting in the middle of the park area. Foolishly, i didn't even think to take any pictures of the building itself, but just imagine a twenty foot chrome kiss and you will be seeing exactly the same thing i did.

Upon entering the kiss i realized it was actually a giant time capsule, full of vending machines, posters and notices that have remained within, untouched, since 1974. It was really bizarre; there were all these old machines and faded pictures in a little circle in this surreal, seemingly pointless, building that happened to be dropped next to a high way rest area. I took a lot of pictures but because everything was shiny in there (as i've said, it's exactly the same as the day it was built, thirty years ago) most of my pictures have weird glares that take away form how creepy everything was. But, for an idea, picture a few dozen more posters like this one:

There were also a few of these, selling now extinct soft drinks and snack foods:

At a different exit somewhere a few hours away, i discovered that before The Shins were making catchy pop music, they were teaching Tae Kwon Do:

End.
