I figured I'd save the Sicily pictures for a rainy day.
Well it's raining, so here they are.
All of the pictures you're looking at are from Palermo, the largest city in Sicily (Italy, duh) until I say they aren't.
That's where they filmed the opera scene in The Godfather III. It's called Teatro Massimo.
My parents in front of il Teatro Massimo
Haha, stupid horse. I didn't get any pictures of it, but what was really cool in Palermo was that there are little stands on the street with enormous buckets of live clams, and a guy will boil clams and make spaghetti and put the clams on top and you can eat it a one of the small tables set up next to it. It's all outside. Talk about fresh food, eh?
It's all outside
Oops.
"The Four Seasons"
I feel really weird taking pictures inside churches. It feels.. wrong. But I took a couple because it was soo pretty.
on the bus!
A street sign in Italian, Hebrew, and Arabic. Isn't that interesting?
Palermo is extremely trafficky and stressful.
Wee.
Inside this governmental building. I forgot what it was called, damn it.
But the ceilings were super nice.
Boat docks!
BEST MUSSELS EVAR.
The fish in the middle is swordfish. It was tasty.
Ahah. My dad kept getting mad at me because I was playing with the fish head. It still had eyes.
The next few are from a place right outside of Palermo called Monreal. They had really good gelato (ice cream)
right outside the cathedral in Monreal.
^ Inside the cathedral. I LOVED the ceiling. They were having a wedding when we went inside. I'd be friggin pissed if tourists came into the church in the middle of my wedding, so i felt kinda bad.
So that's it for Palermo. The next day we rented am Alfa Romeo and drove south to Agrigento, where Greek ruins still stand!
My mum& I
Templi de Hercules, or "Herculon" as my dad called it. (culo means ass in spanish. i guess it's not funny if you don't know. haha).
Again! I can't remember if it's bigger or the 2nd biggest Greek temple still standing after the Parthenon in Athens. Man I really want to go to Athens.
Ha.
Okay, so this is in a small town on the way to Noto. I forgot what it was called, but I have a card from the restaurant we ate at that day. It was soooooo good. I had this dessert from the Sicilian region called cassata. it was sort of like a cake made with pistachios and ricotta cheese. OMGSOGOOD.
My mum and I in Noto. We were walking along the beach (cause it was way too frickin COLD) and i saw this... thing, and i couldn't figure out what it was! The water was so crystal clear and there was no trash or anything else in it.... so after a few minutes of watching it, we figured out it was a sting ray!! But it was really big! (but not manta ray size). it was really scary because its mouth would open up and damn, it was ugly! but i also thought that was neat because i've never seen a sting ray that wasn't in an aquarium.
So after Noto, we drove to Siracusa (Syracuse) for the day, just to visit some more ruins.
This used to be a huge Greek ampitheater, and they're fixing it up so it can still be used to hold plays and stuff. how cool, yeah?
this is cave called Dionysus's (sp?) Ear. The Romans would hold prisoners here and even if youre in the back of the cave whispering, you can hear everything from the entrance, hence, the name.
The Roman ampitheater. not taken care of as well, even though it's more recent than the Greek one.
Fountain of Artemis
EEEEE! These ducks were soo cute! everytime they would try to get some food, they would flip over and their butts and feet would wiggle around in the air. it was SO cute! but the picture looks all crappy because my battery was dying.
I called you from here, La!
walking up this street was such a bitch.
my parents made friends with the couple who owned this small grocery store we went to everyday in Noto. They were cool because they had Silva Brand fabric softener. Rock!
You can't really tell, but at this other church we walked by, there was another wedding going on, and this little carriage with two little kids strolled in with this miniature donkey/horse.. thing. it was so funny! it was dressed up and everything.
some ship in Giardini-Naxos
boat!
water!
at the beach in Giardini-Naxos, the prettiest beach in allllll of sicily!
those chairs were SO comfortable. they even had build in face shades!
CUTEST JELLYFISH EVAAAR. Very Spongebob Squarepantsesque. The little bastard almost stung me though.
The next couple are from Taormina, in my opinion, the prettiest city I visited in Sicily. It's build up on a mountain, and you can see it from the beach.
There are lots of marionettes in Sicily; they're called pupis.
KITTIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Coolest thing ever-- coffee and hot chocolate vending machine. you can get espressos, cappuccinos, cafe macciato, cafe americano, regular hot chocolate, strong hot chocolate, milk chocolate hot chocolate, etc etc. BUT IT WAS SO COOL.
end of sicily. minus pictures from mt. etna, the volcanooooo. those will come in a post of their own. and then all the ones from France will have their own post too.
