couples_therapy 7.1 Meet the family
I should probably get this out right off the bat, Sunny's mother hates me. Don't tell me I'm being paranoid, the woman wants me dead.
It's nothing new, Gwen's mother hated me too and personally I hope she's turning in her grave knowing John Munch paid for her casket and burial. I can see why Sunny's mom doesn't like me though, I'm probably not the kind of man she pictured for her only daughter when she was immigrated to America. Not only am a old schlumpy Jew, but I'm a cop. Every time I walk through the Truscott's front door I remind her mother that her daughter chose to join the force instead of medical school.
The first time I met her parents was Christmas of 2003. Sunny and Cassidy had just moved in a couple months earlier and she though it was about time she introduced me. It was a relatively low key evening, they decided to ease me in slowly and just have it be us and her parents. They'd save the rest of the family for another day. Her father, Lawrence Truscott likes me okay. Asked a lot of questions about my job. I really piqued his interest when I mentioned I used to own a bar.
Her mother though, Valeria, was making snide comments all night. We were sitting at the table and she was putting a casserole dish down and she told me I might night be able to eat it since it wasn't kosher. I told her I didn't keep kosher and she just smiled and said "Of course not." And that's the worst part you know, she hides her disdain behind this June Cleaver veneer and I'm the only one who can see past it. Sunny assures me her mother adores me but all the same I'm insisting we go skiing this Christmas instead.
