Missing the Bake-Off

I have bolloxed up what could have been a very good evening.

Tonight is the bake off. Everyone presents their reels and the Academy members pick which three get shortlisted for the VFX oscar. George Clooney caught some crap for saying this at the Academy Awards last night:

I just got back from seeing the Academy's Best animated short films. occlupanid and morrisa in particular must see "The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello". Think "Paxton Gate and the MJT hire the Quay Brothers to make a science fiction movie about Avian Flu. Edward Gorey art directs."

VFX Bake-Offs Tonight

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is holding the "VFX Bake-Offs" tonight. It's a free, public event: see just the VFX from seven movies whose only redeeming quality is the VFX. Presenters representing each show show a ~10 minute clip of all the best effects and give a ~10 minute discussion about what they did and how they did it. I ( Read more... )

Every year the Academy presents an Oscar for visual effects from a list of nominees. These nominees are produced at the Bake-Off, where Academy members whittle down a larger list to the four Academy finalists. The Bake-off is coming up soon, and here's the list of pictures eligible for nomination:
