I come here not to bury the old iPod Nano, but to praise it.
I've previously explained the value of nonmodal controls for partial attention situations. If you're driving, or biking, or jogging, or doing anything where 90% of your time is on the thing you ought to be doing you really don't want to be looking down at your hands.

Camera Ubiquity++
Today's announcement from Apple that the new iPod Nanos will have cameras in them reminded me of two posts I made a while ago.

New iPod Nano
A few years ago matrushkaka's brother wanted a flash drive to store MP3s. I told him that he basically ought to buy an iPod Nano. At the time, a 2GB Nano was just $30-$40 more than 2GB of ordinary flash. The Nano is a flash drive - that can store *and* play MP3s. I've been playing with my new iPod Touch for about a while now. Hardware-wise it's an excellent device. The screen is a sharp, high-resolution display, the touchscreen responds exactly the way you'd expect it to, and the graphics system is smooth and responsive in a completely appealing way. No third party apps for the iPhone/iPod?
I read something incredibly disappointing this evening.
Apple has worked out deals for 3rd-party games to run on iPod. I wouldn't be surprised if similar arrangements might show up for iPhone. What you are unlikely ever to see are publicly available SDK's so anybody can write code and users can download from applications from anyone anywhere to ( Read more... ) -
iPod Touch
I just ordered a 16GB iPod Touch. I like the iPhone but I don't like the evil 2 year contract, and it will also be nice to double my current Nano's storage space.
One disappointing feature: the Touch doesn't appear to be so iphone-like that it's got an internal microphone and speaker. Whether it's hackable or whether Apple just starts allowing ( Read more... ) -

Apple is holding a press conference tomorrow. Credible rumors include a "touch iPod" - basically an iPhone without the telephone (and 2 year AT&T contract) and a "Fat Nano" featuring a larger screen and movie-playing capability ( Read more... ) -
Media Player Feature I Would Like To See
I'd like to be able to adjust the tempo of the music I'm listening to or increase the speed of the speaker whose podcast I'm listening to without shifting the pitch of the audio. This has been a trick found in very basic digital sound editors since the late 90s at least, and it seems like it ought to be possible to do this in realtime on today's ( Read more... ) -
iTunes 7 bugs
iTunes 7 seems to have a few fairly severe problems in my experience. The Podcasts section of iTunes lets you see which podcasts you've already listened to: there's a blue marker for "unplayed" which disappears to indicate "played".
