Re-Imagining The Smurfs

The last few years have seen a lot of old 70s and 80s franchises "re-imagined" for contemporary audiences. 'Schindler's List' meets 'Defiance'? One possible route is to step away from the metaphysical and give it a genocidal spin akin to ethnic purging.

Gargamel as some twisted second-son of Balthazar, (who could be some psycho militia warlord on his deathbed) and his chief lieutenant / executor of his will Azrael the Cat.

Papa Smurf as the village elder, and the 'next generation' of resistance fighters:

Hefty - the standard brawny and tender type
Brainy - the (inevitable) Judas-character who sells them out resulting in the destruction/razing of Smurf Village
Smurfette - our NeoCinematicHeroine fighter/hottie, and daughter of Papa
Handy - the tinkerer who engineers the tech behind their insurgency
Grouchy - the lovable cynic, second-oldest to Papa Smurf, tired of life after living (and fighting the losing war) against the Rise of Balthazar's empire.
Clumsy - who is killed off rather tragically by Azrael (because in a Michael Bay production, we gots to have a body count of the most beloved characters)
Greedy - the red herring who, in a blind fit of rage, is exiled by our protagonist when all along it was Brainy (prompting the strong reconciliatory / 'we have to save greedy' storyline)

and of course, the headliner of this flick would have to be Tracker Smurf (who's the only one I can even attempt to apply the formula to).
