The last few years have seen a lot of old 70s and 80s franchises "re-imagined" for contemporary audiences. Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Transformers, Daniel Craig's James Bond, Christian Bale's Dark Knight, Warren Ellis's
GI Joe:Resolute. New gritty stories where troubled heroes defend their people against dark, scary threats.
I'd like to see them do a re-imagined version of The Smurfs. It would be great. You've got your small primitive village filled with lots of characters both major and marginal - lots of story potential and character conflict there already - plus lurking in the woods there's a giant ogre trying to boil and devour them. There's a lot of good creature design potential for Azrael as well.
Update: "Small Wonder" or "Alf". You could go really dark with that cat-eating thing. (Attrib: infernauta, via

Update 2: Todd Solondz remake of "Small Wonder" (Attrib: @
