An Olympic Proposal

I'd like to bring more populism to the olympics. I suggest that in every olympic event, competing alongside genuine olympians they should have one totally random guy just picked out of the crowd, Bob Barker style. It's not very impressive to see one totally fast Kenyan slightly beat another totally fast Australian guy. It would be much better to ( Read more... )

Especially with the Marathon! We could totally have a lottery to see who can accurately predict how far Joe Average gets before he falls over dead.

And the pole vault? Comedy gold!

If nothing else, it would help remind the viewers where they, themselves, would probably be in the event, and perhaps it might even encourage viewers to feel a little less like they know jack shit about it and can mouth off about the "mistakes" they see being made by the competitors.

I am behind this idea if, after the 100 yard gasp and wheeze, Joe Sixpack and FloJo et al put on helmets and TIG weld some 14 gauge aluminum. Or evaluate some annual reports for poor accounting practices. Or build a robot out of a box of scrap parts in fifteen minutes or less.

This is effectively what happens already, only Joe Sixpack is from some non contending country - like Sudan. These are the people who don't make it past the first/preliminary heat. These are also the people who are so far behind that they are not on camera, just like JSP wouldn't be...
