Apple Tax: The Santa Rosa low-end

Apple released a new Santa Rosa MacBook update yesterday so I figure I'd run the numbers again.

13" MacBook, 2028cc, 2.27kg, OSX 10.5, 2Ghz/4MB/1GB/80GB, X3100, DVD-R/CD-RW, 802.11n, 1394, GigE, Firewire, camera, Bluetooth, 1280x800 WXGA, 55w/h battery, 3 year warranty: $1348

[X3100 will] use less power and generate less heat than a GeForce 8600 but I'm curious whether it's fast enough to run, say, Portal or TF2.

Word on the street is no ("choppy as a bastard"). Looks like it's about 1/4 the 3DMark performance of the 8600.

what's the difference between "1394" and "Firewire"? not the same tech but with different (marketing) names?

My understanding is that 1394 is Firewire. One's a brand name, the other is an IEEE specification.

Firewire on Apple hardware is always 6-pin, powered. Frequently, non-Apple 1394 uses a 4-pin, non-powered connector, so the device on the other end of the cable needs its own power supply, which is irritating.

I'm not hugely impressed with the video on the new MacBook. I was considering it for my next hardware purchase, but will probably hold off.
