New Orleans Flood: Part 2

japlady mentioned that New Orleans is flooding again.

In case Bush repeats his famous flub and says "No one anticipated the *second* beach of the levees", this isn't exactly surprising. The patched levee was patched with "gravel and loose rock" to a height of 8 feet which is 6 feet lower than the original height which did not withstand Katrina.

In Canada, a "levy" is a free party thrown by the city every New Year's day, with free food and bad music. Probably came from the French usage.

Actually, it appears that height had nothing to do with it.

This article from the WaPo points to many engineers who argue that it appears the water didn't reach great enough heights to go over the top. So the blame is likely on poorly built levees.
