japlady mentioned that
New Orleans is flooding again.
In case Bush repeats his famous flub and says "No one anticipated the *second* beach of the levees", this isn't exactly surprising. The patched levee was patched with "gravel and loose rock" to a height of 8 feet which is 6 feet lower than the original height which did not withstand Katrina.
While I'm on the subject, here is a public service announcement from the Tongodeon Department of Spelling:
A
levee is an embankment to prevent inundation, derived from French "lever": to raise or rise.
The verb
levy is to gather or exact, as in "to levy taxes".
The noun levy is either a taxation measure or
a 17th century French king's audience held when the king is in bed.
Eugene Levy is the actor who played "Jim's Dad" in the "American Pie" films.
Levees is the plural of "levee."
Levies is the second-person-present-tense of the verb "to levy", as in "George Bush levies federal taxes to pay for Hurricane reconstruction."
Levies is also the plural form of the noun "levy", as in "Many levies were declared by George Bush in order to pay for Hurricane reconstruction."
Levys is the plural form of "Eugene Levy" if he were to be cloned, as in "There is a mob of Eugene Levys at the castle gates bearing torches and pitchforks."
