Durarara!!:
Infectious by nntntdlve - [Note: This post is locked, but the comm is freely joinable.] After all the softer art I've been looking at on Pixiv, sometimes it's still nice to read something that's a lot harsher, a lot sharper and more brutal, between these two. I like the atmosphere the author is doing for--the sense of craziness that pervades all of the DRRR!! characters and its version of Ikebukuro, along with how rough Shizuo and Izaya's fights are. Even the sex between them is rough and not clean or easy, plus, Izaya's reactions felt really on to me. (Shizuo/Izaya, a little NSFW.)
Durarara!!:
House Arrest by urusai_lilania - I'll grant ahead of time that this fic probably could have dropped a lot of the descriptions of the characters and just gone with "him" or a character's name, but once I got past that, this fic really hit something right on for me. It's not a nice fic, it's angry and teasing and Izaya is a total dick and Shizuo is full of rage, even the sex reflects that--which I'd want to slap a potential non-con label on, even though Izaya clearly egged Shizuo into it. But, after all the softer, nicer fanart I've been looking at lately, this helped balance me out, because it's all about the sharper, harsher sides of these characters, the way they work each other up and it felt spot on for that. The way they both get under each other's skin painfully and, in some ways, it's funny because Izaya is hilarious but... well, basically, the characterization here really worked for me, there were so many perfect moments as Shizuo basically ruins Izaya's dinner and his entire apartment by showing up at his place and just. a ;sdlkfjasl;kj yes, more like this plz. (Shizuo/Izaya, around a hard R or so.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN!:
Cold Things Never Catch Fire by zauberer_sirin - After all the Pixiv art I've been looking at lately, I've been in a D18 mood again lately and then along comes this fic by Zau and it's just... this is why I read the pairing and why I love both these characters so much. She does such a brilliant job of getting into both of them, but especially Dino and how he views Hibari, what he knows and what he doesn't know about him, how he is actually pretty careful in his approach to Hibari most of the time, because he's someone you have to almost outmaneuver to get anywhere with. The age difference, the way Hibari and Dino have this lack of communication, the way Hibari fights everything the way he fights an opponent, all of it is so sharp and almost painful and brilliantly done. This is just about everything I want from D18 fic, right down to Dino managing to soften Hibari's edges a little, while sharpening up others, because a smart, intelligent, sharp Dino is the character I recognize from the series--all at the same time that he's the same cheerful, sunny mafia boss. Just. a;sdlfkjaslkj the progression of their relationship was perfect and I love her Dino's take on Hibari so much. *___* (Dino/Hibari, R-rated.)
Naruto:
Tied to You by aviss - I've had a small but growing list of Naruto fic I've been meaning to read for ages, always waiting for that time when I was really super in the mood again and I didn't think that would be today, but... I was going through springkink's latest posts and thought, well, I'll at least read the beginning. What I really liked about this fic was the way it started--Kakashi's first person POV notes that Naruto isn't stupid, that he often plays the fool but isn't actually dumb, which was a really nice little observation. From there, it's this cute, fun fic where Iruka and Kakashi are handcuffed together for the day, where Kakashi knows that there's something between them on both sides and it's just... fun and charming and light-hearted, all things that are nice to read in this fandom sometimes. (Kakashi/Iruka.)
Naruto:
Decisions Don't Come Easy by Aishuu - [Note: This is the first in a series of fics, but the first can stand well on its own.] As I read more and more ongoing WJ manga, I become more and more attached to ideas like the one in this fic--how things could have gone a little differently for the world and cast I became so attached to. The idea here is a simple one--instead of having Itachi kill the Uchiha clan, he'll train Itachi to be the next Hokage--but it's sort of a breathtaking one for all the potential it holds. I really like the beginning here, with Sandaime struggling, how you can see how very close it came to the canon we know, but then veers off at the last moment. It's a great little read and, oh, it just fuels my interest in Itachi all the more. (No warnings/pairings.)
Naruto:
The Reluctant Hokage by Aishuu - [Note: This is the second in a series of fics, which you can find by
this tag.] Oh, this is only 600 words, but it packs such a hell of a punch. I love that, just because things go a little differently, because an entire clan wasn't wiped out, doesn't mean that it's going to be easy or that it might even be better than it was. The Uchiha are still the Uchiha and all the problems that presents. But Itachi is taking an entirely different path here, as he becomes the Godaime Hokage of Konoha and the field is now wide open for how things could change. And asd;lfkjaslkj shit this is really fueling my fascination with Itachi now. (No warnings/pairings.)
Naruto:
The Challenger by Aishuu - [Note: This is the third in a series of fics, which you can find by
this tag.] So, after the last installment, things were looking kind of tense, but this chapter... is a bit more light-hearted, if still just reeling with possibilities for where this could all go. This chapter is about Itachi as a teenage Hokage and then the introduction of Naruto into the series and, oh, it's so much hilarity, because, naturally, Itachi as Hokage is going to be his rival now! Itachi's constant headache is great and the final scene of this was just perfectly hilarious and so easy to see happening. I would definitely like to see more of Naruto in this universe, how things were/will be different for him here and to see Itachi's further reactions to him, because Naruto's definitely not the kind of character that goes away. XD (No warnings/pairings.)
The Little Mermaid:
Cast Your Soul by allira_dream - Like a lot of people, I have a special fondness for The Little Mermaid and these characters, so I'm always curious how nostalgia vs reading fic so long after watching the movie as a kid will pan out. This fic is utterly wonderful--it's slightly AU, if the ending of the movie had gone just a little differently, if Eric and Ariel had both lived but been separated by the ocean again--but it really only sort of deepens how much they loved each other. And, oh, the longing on both sides is lovely and the ending is sheer perfection. I think I'm with the commenters in that I love it even more than the original. (Eric/Ariel.)
The Princess and the Frog:
Meet Me in the Middle by Aishuu - Well, as long as I was catching up on my fic read/a bunch of Aishuu's fics, I could hardly resist this one. And, oh, I really liked this short little piece! It really nicely captures the dynamic that Tiana and Naveen found themselves in--a little bit of push and pull from both sides, how they balance each other out with (too much) hard work vs (too much) lazing around. I was just delighted by this piece. (Naveen/Tiana.)
Trigun:
The Still Before by fireun - I almost passed this one by because it'd been so long since I read any Trigun fic, but then thought, aw, what the hell. I am really glad I did because this is a fantastic look at Wolfwood and Vash on the eve of their big showdown, all the more bittersweet because we know how things turn out. The way they both see right through each other but pretend they don't, the way they both have all this depth hidden under their surface personalities, all without breaking the almost light-hearted air on the surface, while they try to get some sleep, it's spot on for me. (Wolfwood/Vash.)
Weiss Kreuz:
untitled by voksen - So the summary of this fic is: just after they finish eliminating the last of SZ/Rosenkreuz post-gluhen, one of them suddenly grows wings How could I NOT read it? And it's a great little comment fic and I love how it's just one more crazy thing in the lives of Crawford and Schuldich and there's all these great little touches and just. WINGFIC. I LOVE IT. (This is entirely gen, but I guess you could read Crawford/Schuldich into it.)
Final Fantasy VII/Final Fantasy Dissidia Doujinshi (raw):
Chronos I - [Note: This post is locked, but the comm should be easily joinable.] God, I love Kiki's doujinshi for this pairing, she draws Sephiroth and Cloud just beautifully, even if they're a little more skinny than I'd prefer. But the close-ups of their faces and the fight scene she puts in the beginning? Gorgeous. It's not a long story or really a complicated one, it's pretty much just an excuse for an encounter between Sephiroth and Cloud, which leads to porn, which leads to a couple of other encounters, which leads to a to be continued. But, man, it was still really a satisfying read today. (Sephiroth/Cloud, NC-17.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (scanslated):
Mr. & Mr. Hitman - [Note: You'll have to scroll down a bit for the link.] I have this huge fondness for Yoneda Kou's 8018 doujinshi and I'm not sure I can put it into words precisely why. A lot of it is that she tends to write longer stories (80 pages this time!) and that I really like her Yamamoto/Hibari dynamic, but it's also in the way she draws. It takes awhile to get used to, but the more I read of hers, the more I notice that she's really disciplined with her art and I feel like I could be reading a BL mangaka's work here. And I really like her AUs--based on the "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" movie this time--and how she twists them slightly and adapts the characters to them. Seeing Hibari and Yamamoto as assassins who don't know about the other, seeing them slowly grow closer, all the tension between them, it's all really delicious. She's kind of turning into one of my favorite doujinshika for this pairing. Also, I love how genuinely satisfying the porn was after so much lead up to it! (Yamamoto/Hibari, NC-17.)
Naruto Doujinshi (scanslated):
Ginya - [Note: This post is locked, but the comm should be freely joinable.] This is actually two different stories put into one file, but they work well together and it was nice to have something long-ish to read. The first is a story about Kakashi randomly picking Iruka up and developing a deep connection to him, so much that he uses Iruka as a key to unlocking his sealed memories when it's needed. The second is actually more of an Iruka-centric story about Naruto and the Nine-Tail's effect on the village's people even years later, along with how Kakashi intersected with his life along the way. Both are very nicely drawn and just solid, interesting stories that are admittedly fluffy, but still delightful to read. (Kakashi/Iruka.)
One Piece Doujinshi (scanslated):
Ayamachi - [Note: This post is locked, but the comm should be freely joinable.] I was immediately intrigued by this being a doujinshi about Ace and Luffy, though, really it's almost more gen than anything. The second half of the story implies more, just in the way they touch each other sometimes, but you could proooobably read this as gen? Either way, it really, really worked for me. It's a quiet story, about how Luffy can never beat Ace in a fight, not even once, then about how much these feelings are warmer than anything else, for both of them, and it's just. It's full of these quiet moments and gorgeous art of the two of them that I loved it. (I'd say gen more than anything, but it's a little Luffy+Ace.)
Prince of Tennis Doujinshi (scanslated):
Rainbow Rainbow - [Note: This post is locked, but the comm is freely joinable.] I have this thing with InuKai, where I ship it, but it's hard to find something that resonates with me. But I have a basic fondness for Jet Monster, so I clicked onto this and decided to read. Even though it's pretty much just an excuse to get Inui and Kaidoh into a rainy lockerroom and then have sex, somehow this is what works for me. I really like this Kaidoh a lot, even in just a handful of pages, his relationship with Inui, often overwhelming and a little uncomfortable, but something he accepts and wants, is what I look for. Plus, man, the artist draws them both really pretty while still being recognizable. (Inui/Kaidoh, NC-17.)
