So, when I met up with Teap I told her one of my latest revelations about this lovely pairing that needs more love and appreciation--
Today I re-read the "infamous" ch.72, and I even played around with some scans to show you something that apparently nobody noticed before--

You definitely put things in a way I never thought about before! But I've always felt that it's been way too easy to simply blame everything on Haruna because Haruna is so oblivious and so obviously self-centered, but in some ways Akimaru is even at bigger fault.
The whole thing about Akimaru being really clever with words was one of the things I focused on from this conversation, and the way Haruna thought about it to himself made it clear that he wasn't just now realizing it. That in fact it's something that he's known about forever and just accepts: he can't win against Akimaru when it comes to a war of words. Which means to me that Akimaru probably has been showing off his cleverness in that respect for quite a while now. I suspect that Akimaru does it because it's one of the things he knows he's good at, and he wants Haruna to really SEE him. All he wants is for Haruna to value and treasure him the way HE treasures HARUNA, but he's never given a thought to how all that cleverness ends up making Haruna feel.
But I never really thought about it as Haruna being AWARE that this was basically a love confession from Akimaru. But when you point out that look on his face, you're right: he's obviously stunned and really taken aback and is suddenly sweating and (as you say) even scared. So it's obvious he was taking out of that more than Akimaru himself even knew he was saying. But then when Haruna says "do you know what you're saying?" and Akimaru turns it back around on HIM, I think you're also right that Haruna comes to doubt his gut-reaction because he sees that it's possible that Akimaru is actually just fucking with him, and in the context of this super important game against ARC that Haruna has been aiming for for MONTHS, Haruna doesn't want to get derailed trying to untangle Akimaru's motives and real meanings from what it seemed like he was actually saying, since he knows that if he tries HE CAN'T WIN ANYWAY, that Akimaru will just find some way to turn it back on him again.
AND YOU'RE RIGHT, CHAPTER 74 SHOWS THAT THEY ARE BOTH RESOLVING TO CHANGE AND TRYING TO SEE EACH OTHER AND THEIR FEELINGS IN A NEW LIGHT.

For me I kind of see both Haruna and Akimaru having naturally uke-ish personalities, at least when it comes to what they want out of sex. As I've told Ten elsewhere, one of my big things in envisioning the AkiHaru dynamic is that Akimaru's lust really is geared more towards having Haruna top HIM, since Haruna is so sexy and strong and would physically just be EXCELLENT at it. But I think that Akimaru ends up as the "reluctant top" (thank you, Genshiken, for giving me this terminology!) because in the end he really is the one of the two of them who is more clearly and permanently besotted (WHETHER OR NOT HE CONSCIOUSLY KNOWS IT) and so giving Haruna what he wants is his number one priority of everything.
And so if Haruna wants Akimaru to top, he'll do it. Reluctantly. BUT EVENTUALLY HE BECOMES SUPER ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT IT BECAUSE WHAT HE WANTS MOST OF ALL IS SEEING THAT LOOK OF PURE PLEASURE AND HAPPINESS ON HARUNA'S FACE, and that's what he gets when he gives Haruna what he wants. XD
But the other main reason I like Akimaru always knowing it isn't just because of practicality, it is BECAUSE IT MAXIMIZES AKIMARU'S SUFFERING. AND IT MAKES HIM MORE CREEPY. /is kind of sadistic.

At first I was a sincere supporter of Haruna as the seme, 'cause of course he's so strong and full of stamina, Akimaru would just melt there in his arms XDD but Akimaru's personality is so-- "devoted" that I can totally see him doing that XDD ..After all Haruna's uke faces are just BEAUTIFUL, and of course Akimaru wants to see more of it ;3; --WHO WOULDN'T ;3; ?!!
Mhhh, maybe I'll try to write myself about oblivious!Akimaru and bothered!Haruna... I wonder. Haruna is so little tactful XDD Akimaru would totally try to keep his feelings for Haruna bottled inside... But I don't see Haruna doing so. Maybe? --At least until he'd made sure that he got Akimaru right XDD

My thought is that when Haruna is (rarely) on top, it is aaaaalll about teasing Akimaru to the highest heights of pleasure, making it that Akimaru is so breathlessly turned on he can'tt hardly even speak, he just makes all the most delicious noises. When Haruna is on top I think that's also when things get slightly kinky, since Haruna will come to understand Akimaru's kinks pretty well (Haruna is not very kinky himself), and so will incorporate that into his devastating teasing repatoire, driving Akimaru wild. Haruna would be kind of awful, dragging things out and denying Akimaru release, but since that is a part of what I think Akimaru goes for, Akimaru would just be melting in happiness.

Fufu, yeah ♥ Something like, since Haruna is so cool and everything, and he feels like he's really not a match to him, he likes to give him those tiny verbal stabbies that throw him off his balance...
If you look at the way they interact, Akimaru usually breaks Haruna's speeches with sarcastic remarks-- Even in chapter 74, when Haruna pointed at him declaring his great "Akimaru Rising Project" (LOL), Akimaru stuttered that "Don't point at me" that totally break the rhythm/seriousness of Haruna's words.
So, yeah, he definitely does so because he wants to be noticed, and in a sense because he wants Haruna to recognize his own value and strenght... That's why I also believe that Akimaru is best suited as the seme XD
Yeees, I didn't notice at first eiher, but then when we were translating that doujinshi shortie (I'll write you an e-mail about it, later XD), Haruna's flustered face came to my mind and I realized that that was a-- Very strange overreaction coming from Haruna, you know XD ?
Ahah, and yes, of course baseball comes before Akimaru and he can't waste time with him, but I liked how as soon as the match was over his priority became Akimaru, and he even acted as if he could turn Akimaru into Musashino's final weapon, LOL XD
--I would love to see Akimaru's reaction to all this new attention from Haruna :D I wonder if thinking about motivation and dreams would make him realize that his greatest wish is getting into Haruna's pants ASAP, LOL! >DDD
--And what 'technique' would he use to reassure Haruna about the sincerity of his feelings-- Or would it be Haruna who would give up to the sexual tension first, and would struggle to get a proper "love confession" out of Aki XDD ?

BUT YOU ARE RIGHT! IT IS YOUR DUTY!!! I bet if we had Teap talking about why she loves Haruna/Kaguyan that she'd end up having a lot of reasons too! AND WOULD SHOW US AN ENDLESS AMOUNT OF SCREENSHOTS!!!
THE GREAT AKIMARU RAISING PROJECT. Yes, Akimaru is FULL of those like snarky side-remarks which end up totally undermine whatever sincere point Haruna is making. He probably thinks he is being funny, but come on Akimaru! THAT IS NOT CUTE AT ALL!
A similar example is when Abe is accusing Haruna of having given up back in the Seniors, earlier in chapter 74, and Akimaru cuts in with his snide little "See? See?" which is his way of digging in about how Haruna USED TO BE JUST LIKE HIM (except it wasn't the same sort of situation at all!) and so therefore HARUNA HAS NO ROOM TO TALK (meaning, shut up Haruna, stop telling me I suck, because you suck too!).
The first time I saw that, it made me realize that Akimaru probably never takes Haruna's side in things. He kind of spends most of that discussion between Abe and Haruna kind of subtly sticking up for ABE. And when I thought back, I remembered the whole bathroom incident where Mihashi runs into Haruna (and because he is Mihashi, is stupidly speechless and therefore doesn't apologize at all), and the first thing Akimaru does when he follows in after Haruna is hit HARUNA and blame him! I mean, in the end that turns out to be the right thing to do, since Mihashi is sweet and harmless and needed someone to intervene on his behalf just then because he didn't MEAN to carelessly run into Haruna, he was just DESPERATELY SEEKING TOILET PAPER FOR SAKAEGUCHI, WHO WAS IN A SERIOUS PINCH. But it really stuck with me how Akimaru's first instinct was to take sides AGAINST Haruna, assuming HARUNA was in the wrong, even though from a technical standpoint it was all Mihashi's fault. He really shouldn't have been running in the bathroom! IT'S NOT HARUNA'S FAULT THAT HE'S BUILT LIKE A TRUCK AND SO THE RESULTING COLLISION CAUSED MIHASHI TO BOUNCE RIGHT OFF HARUNA ONTO THE FLOOR!!!!
So I feel like Haruna has long felt disregarded and looked over and uncared-for by Akimaru. And so when he hears that RIDICULOUS and OBVIOUS confession of TOTALLY CREEPY DEVOTION, Haruna's first response isn't "eww, that's creepy," it's "OMG HE ACTUALLY CARES ;;__;;" So you're right, Haruna's sudden resolve to make Akimaru into "Musashino's final weapon" is HILARIOUSLY OVERREACTING and KIND OF PREPOSTEROUSLY IMPOSSIBLE, and yet he believes in it with his whole heart, and you have to ask yourself, "why? Why does Haruna honestly think he can make Akimaru so much more awesome and give him so much motivation in JUST ONE YEAR?"
And it's because Haruna is going to seduce Akimaru into PROVING HIMSELF TO BE THE MAN and TAKING THE LEAD IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP. He might never be able to give a great lead as a catcher but THAT IS NOT THE ONLY KIND OF LEAD AKIMARU CAN GIVE HIM LOL.
The idea of Akimaru only coming to realize that he wants to get into Haruna's pants after all that is REALLY INTRIGUING TO ME. I find myself thinking, "can I write this?" "Is there a way to tell that story?" YES I WANT TO KNOW THE ANSWERS TO ALL THE QUESTIONS YOUR RAISED. ♥

I-I think that in all of this Haruna is very, very cute.
I think that Haruna is somehow a "frail" person, who's eager to please and try his best... That's why he got injuried in middle school and played his hardest against ARC... The fact is that his goodwill is usually disregarded (middle school, Akimaru, Abe--) and that's why he grew up so caustic and pushy. He learned that to make his dreams come true he can't do it by himself and that he can't let others use him.
---But with Akimaru is different, right? Aki would always be there to take care of him, right..? like buying him extra milk and giving him massages, right ;___; ..?
--AND OF COURSE MOTIVATION+DREAMS would lead to HOT SEX ALL DAY LONG.
--Ok, not all day long, 'cause there's training and meals, and gym too, but some daily smexing is required!!

As for Haruna being a "frail" person: man, I agree so, so much. I see him as having been this really sweet and practically defenseless child who only ever wanted to make people happy and to do his best (EXACTLY AS YOU SAY). But people like Abe and Akimaru, who know him better than anyone, are the ones least likely to give him the benefit of the doubt or to believe in his pure and caring intentions. ;;__;;
BUT YES AKIMARU IS DIFFERENT. AKIMARU ONLY WITHHOLDS THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT BECAUSE HE IS AFRAID TO SHOW HIS DEVOTION SO OPENLY. Once he realizes it is not only okay, but that Haruna wants his devotion BADLY, Akimaru can be free to be a totally indulgent and wonderful boyfriend! THE ONE WHO SPENDS ALL OF HIS TIME TAKING CARE OF HIM, HOLDING HIM UP AND HELPING HIM TO STAY STRONG.

If you look at them, Abe was just psyched about him because he pitched cool stuff, but he never really understood him (in fact he was shocked during the match against ARC), and Aki-- Aki is just so half-assed on everything, even his ABSOLUTE DEVOTION stinks of laziness XDDD
--I think that the one who got Haruna better 'til now is probably Mihashi... Must be 'cause he's a fellow pitcher? LOL, THESE CATCHERS ARE A FAIL XD

Abe couldn't get past the "considering school baseball as training to go pro", so he didn't even try to understand why Haruna was so adamant about the pitch count, but I (we) cant blame him for it at all since the Haruna he knew was a very pissed, wounded animal-wild Haruna! Also, they only played together for a relatively small amount of time and there was the HUGE gap of senpai-kouhai between them (reason why Haruna never bothered to tell him much either), so we couldn't really expect miracles. I think it's quite amazing that Abe ended up being such an important piece to Haruna's growth despite all this. The coach must have had incredible foresight!
ON THE OTHER HAND, Akimaru's known Haruna for a LIFETIME and Haruna had EXPECTATIONS and he failed to meet them (because to him baseball is a hobby and not his reason for living that would be Haruna, apparently XD) and Haruna gave up on him. Result? Haruna is alone.
I'm sure Haruna felt pretty lonely during his extra training hours and that gave him quite a ot of time to think about things and grow up while Akimaru thought about playing his videogames at home.
Result? Haruna is a little more grown up than Akimaru.
Also because he had lots of different experiences with adults, i.e. going from a doctor to another to get his injury diagnosed and deal with the coach and talking with his family about changing teams and etc.
THIS MEANS that during the time he's not BASEBALLING (LOL) he likes to behave however the hell he wants because 1)HE CAN BECAUSE HE IS AN AMAZING ATHLETE (I'm doing jock philosophy here!) 2)HE DESERVES IT since he's spent time feeling a bit lonely. Finally, he takes out his disappointment in Akimaru by giving him friendly punches because 1)HE DESERVES THEM FOR DISAPPOINTING HIM ALL THOSE TIMES, 2)affection can show through (friendly)violence, I know this by first hand experience! <3
OH, OH! AND OBVIOUSLY MIHASHI IS THE ONE TO UNDESTAND HARUNA BETTER, I CALL IT GENIUS PITCHERS' TELEPATHY!!!
