So, when I met up with Teap I told her one of my latest revelations about this lovely pairing that needs more love and appreciation--
Today I re-read the "infamous" ch.72, and I even played around with some scans to show you something that apparently nobody noticed before--
As my fellows AkiHaru fans know, we always gave for GRANTED that Akimaru has always been in love with Haruna, sighing after his dense childhood friend for his feelings going unnoticed.
On the other hand, Haruna was the dense moron who just thought about practicing and getting stronger XD
Well, if you read through the lines-- I think that it's the opposite.
And what we call Akimaru's "confession" in this chapter is of course Akimaru's confession, but he boy is TOTALLY UNAWARE of it-- WHILE HARUNA GETS THE MESSAGE.
For credits sake, I got the RAWS from
oofuri and the translation from
narwhaltorte :3
So, here Akimaru finally reacts to Haruna's accusations and tries to make his point.
He tells Haruna what a big influence he's always been for him, from baseball to snacks, and a certain point he blames on Haruna ALL OF IT.
As if Akimaru was doing something obvious by following Haruna's charming attitude, but at the same time he was expecting some kind of "gratitude" out of Haruna, something that wouldn't make their friendship feel so "utilitaristic".
Akimaru uses the word "lackey" to express how Haruna makes him feel.
Please, compare Akimaru's feelings with those of his senpais/members of Musashino baseball team: everyone is aware of Haruna's awesomeness, and they follow him because they feel energized, inspired, MOTIVATED.
Akimaru shows this same need to follow Haruna, but his motivations are weak and nebulous-- Even him can't describe them.
I have the impression that everyone finds Haruna awesome because they recognize him in the role of their ace pitcher.
But Akimaru doesn't have such a "limited" vision of things. Akimaru decided to follow Haruna way before he got interested in baseball (if he ever did, LOL XD) and what he WANTS TO SEE in Haruna is much more than a pitcher, but a true friend.
What really makes Akimaru's angry is the lack of recognition from Haruna.
I like to think that Akimaru is in love with Haruna since FOR EVER, but he's not aware that what he feels for Haruna is love.
He complains with Haruna because he couldn't see the OBVIOUS, or that he influenced him so much that of course he joined Musashino, of course he joined the baseball club and of course he became a catcher. It's because he has to follow him!
Please, look at Akimaru's expression above. It's assertive, a bit worried, passionate and honest.
He wants his friend recognize how much he sacrified to be next to him, so he doesn't want to hear stuff like "you're not trying hard enough" or "I give up on you"!
Now, shift your attention on Haruna's face.
Haruna understood EVERYTHING.
Haruna is shocked, surprised, and a bit scared.
Haruna knows that that's not how a friend should feel. It's not ever how a fan should feel..!
So, you know, he asks Akimaru if he understands what the heck is he saying. If he's really pulling a passionate love confession on him.
--And Akimaru replies if he's understanding how much shit he had to go through to be as close as he is to Haruna now.
--And then Haruna just cuts it off. Discussing with Akimaru over things that he can't even understand right is pointless. Akimaru is the kind of person who'd say something totally inopportune just to mess with him just to win in a battle of wits-- And as Haruna leaves his little backstage and decides to ignore it 'cause there's no need to get worked up over Akimaru's asshole-ness, Akimaru just wonders what the fuck was with talking about such things that happened in their childhood.
Akimaru doesn't look relieved of aware of what just happened. He didn't free himself of the frustration and uselessness that Haruna made him feel.
And Haruna of course has nothing to blame himself with-- Since Akimaru is a moron who doesn't know how a friend should act, least how a catcher should.
So, in my opinion, the ultimate dynamic is this:
- Haruna wanted Akimaru to be his "special someone" (a friend, teammate) and coerces Akimaru with cute, demanding attention.
- Charmed by this badmouthed but honest fellow, Akimaru decided to follow him.
- Due to the lack of interests, Haruna decides to give up on Akimaru, but Akimaru, who's not aware of it, just keeps absorbing what is around Haruna, 'cause he wants him to keep considering him "the best". I assume that somewhere around here Haruna got to know Takaya, shifting his attention from Akimaru to him.
- Takaya deserted Haruna (for the same reason Haruna ditched Akimaru!! Because he was an egoist who didn't care about baseball XDD !!), but Akimaru followed Haruna in the same high school.
- Since they are both boys (so less sensitive to sentimental stuff XD) they didn'ty notice the changes in each other and kept going on with this "bocchan+faithful pet" kind of relationship-- But if Akimaru is the one feeling like a pet, dragged around by his capricious master, same goes for Haruna: Akimaru is not serious with him, he's just giving his a few pats on his head for the sake of quiet living.
- And of course it's a fragile dynamic destined to crash under stress. And it broke under stress, leaving Akimaru unaware of his feelings, and Haruna incapable of accepting them.
- Fortunately came ch.74 with its awesome resolution XD Haruna realizes that he can't keep crying over Takaya, so he better work with that Akimaru that he didn't "cherish" enough.
And Akimaru realizes that probably-- "maybe", he's necessary to Haruna just how much he is to him... "Dreams", uh..?
--So, what's going to happen to our boys..? Someday we'll get to know it-- 'Til then, we can produce tons of fanworks >DD
