CESTVS vol.2 and vol.3 summaries∼

Dec 19, 2009 20:51

Here I am, bringing the promised summaries (with pictures, of course)!
I don't think the most of you will care, but whatever! Hopefully some fan of the series could gain some more infos while looking for it on Google XD Let's just hope this will ever jump on Google's frontpage in the first place >3>

Anyway, I already bothered you about this series here, so I'll skip all the introductions and stuff, and immediately jump on vol.2 and 3's summaries.

Just some notes before getting ready:
  • I'm using the terms "boxing" and "grappling" to make you understand what I'm talking about, but remember that here we're talking about the ancestors of these sports, and the rules, as their proper names ("Pugilism", "Pancrates" or "Greco-roman wrestling"...), were pretty different from today's.
  • Back then (this manga was first published in Italy in 1999) Italian editors had the bad habit to "reflect" the original pages to make manga readable from left to right... So keep in mind that these pictures are specular to the originals ^_^;

Sooo, the second volume opens with the introduction of cute Shirley, an acrobat from a travelling company.
After a very gruesome fight, Shirley tries to cheer up Cestus with some tricks but unfortunately he kinda fails.
The day after Roxane, Nerone's bodyguard, goes to Valente's boxing school (where Cestus lives as a boxing slave) to ask Cestus to come with her 'cause Nerone wants to meet him.
While at Nerone's palace, Cestus meets Shirley again: his company has been employed by the Emperor and the other members are warming up in the garden, and the two boys greet each other.
Cestus finally meets Nerone: the young emperor set an artistic competition among various sculptors and Cestus is asked to pose as a model.
Cestus is kinda WTF, but then sees that Lusca is sharing the same pitiful fate and he's even more WTF.
Lusca asks Cestus if after the last fight he feels a bit better... The words of the friend make Cestus wonder about his own self-confidence and he realizes that he came to envy Lusca a bit 'cause of his assertiveness: while he's easily dragged in the weirdest orders, Lusca can be pretty confident about everything because of his strenght and the trust on his capacities. But Lusca's posing as a model too, anyway.

While the two boys are posing, Nerone says something about Lusca's scar on his chest: "Without that you'd be perfect."
It's a scar tied to a painful event in Lusca's childhood.
Nerone dismisses the matter and for the first time Lusca notices Nerone's coldness... His body reacts unwillingly and he's about to strike him with the sword, when a clueless Cestus reminds him about being still for the portrait; Lusca realizes what he was about to do and feels overly stressed. Nerone suggests to take a pause, and while Lusca faces his lord with this new awareness, Cestus goes to take a little run to not break his training session.
Meanwhile Afranio Burro and Lucio Seneca, Nerone's chief of the imperial guard and his tutor, are worried about the frivolity of their emperor: the boy is mostly attracted by arts and couldn't care less about politics and the administration of the empire.
Overhearing the discussion, Demetrio tries to focus the attention of Burro on a certain matter but he's roughly dismissed by him: a boxer shouldn't mind the business of the empire.
As Demetrio is not quite amused by Burro's remarks, Cestus decides to take a bath and he meets Shirley there...

While approaching the boy he realizes that-- Shirley is a girl D: !!!
Shirley is about to kill him, but stops and just threatens the boy to not tell anyone about her secret.
In front of the serious risk to get his weenie cut, Cestus swears that he won't tell anyone and Shirley just leaves a heart-throbbing Cestus on the floor.
But it looks like her gender is not the only secret of the red-headed girl: she's an assassin hired by Nerone's opposers and her mission is to kill the emperor D:
Shirley still remembers the horrors she has to face when she was captured by the Roman soldiers who attacked her village: because of this she refused to act like a woman and promised herself to take her revenge against Rome.
The day after Shirley and Cestus met again and they shared some memories about their conditions as slaves: the life of a woman is full of troubles, that's why Shirley has to act like a boy... She hated when she was referred as "The little girl with red hair" and those memories made her cry-- Cestus feels guilty about reminding her about it but Shirley refuses to get comforted and rushes him away... She even makes him cry a bit ;_;

After this we get to know Britannico, the brother of Ottavia, Nerone's wife, who is yhe actual son of Claudio, the previous emperor: Britannico was supposed to be the next emperor, but after his mother Messalina's death, the widow Agrippina became Claudio's wife and forced her son Nerone as Claudio's successor, since he was older than Britannico.
As Ottavia tries her best to please Nerone, Britannico is obviously angry at the whole situation.

Meanwhile, since nobody cares about Demetrio, the man meets Agrippina to tell her about a pressing matter... That same night, Cestus is training in the garden, when he just spots Shirley jumping in the palace.
He runs after her but the girl is faster: she's finally in front of a sleeping Nerone and is about to strike but she's promptly stopped!

Lusca took Nerone's place and just managed to block the assassin.
Since Lusca is a smartass boy, he notices that Shirley is a girl and gets distracted, letting her escape.
While the other soldiers slain the other members of the company, Cestus manages to block Shirley, and hopes to change the girl's mind.
The boys are easily reached by the guards and Shirley tries to kill herself to escape the shame, but Cestus hits her promptly on her face, stopping her.
The guards are amused, Cestus is not.

Agrippina praises Demetrio for his good job in front of Burro and Nerone.
Demetrio brags about the good things that even a boxer could do and Burro is not amused; the cospirators are easily found, but they all killed themselves with poison: they were men faithful to Claudio and Nerone's opposers.
Nerone, the shy and hesitant boy is finally forced to face the reality of things: he's not just loved by everyone just because he's the emperor D:

Next there's a very stupid part where Cestus and Lusca try to save Shirley from instant death.

She has to be executed, but Cestus jumps in and offers to kill her himself.
He's planning to avoid all her dagger's attacks to show that she's not skilled enough to kill someone.
Agrippina says that it's not such a big deal, since she just had to kill a sleeping person.
At this point Lusca gets in the arena: after showing that Shirley is actually a girl, he says that she wasn't there to actually kill the emperor but to sleep with him: she wanted to give him her body hoping to be forgiven-- Demetrio is pretty WTFed by the imagery of his son sleeping with a girl and he just sees the bunch of lies behind it and threatens the boy to slice his head piece to piece if he is going on with such a shitty play.
Agrippina dismisses the whole thing with a laugh and just forces Shirley to exile.

Cestus rushes to thank Lusca, who dismisses the boy's tears of gratitude with a cute smile and then he rushes to Shirley, telling her that he hopes to meet her again∼ And Shirley punches him! She's going to be exiled, no way they're going to meet each other again >_<# !!

Meanwhile Nerone is pretty troubled.
He starts to wonder about why people would want him dead, and he gets more and more paranoid.
Cestus just happens to find him: the sculpuring contest is almost over, and he's there to tell him that tomorrow he'll be back to the training grounds-- But Nerone doesn't want that ;_; He wants Cestus by his side! He can't trust anyone, please Cestus don't leave him alooooneeee ;___; !!!
But Cestus has to refuse: he has to go back to his companions, his beloved teacher and most importantly he wants to gain his freedom with his own strenght: escaping from reality and troubles because of fear means condemning themselves to an even sadder destiny.

A few days later, as Shirley is getting dragged to the closest harbor to reach the "prison island" of Corsica, Cestus is facing his new opponent: facing his own destiny and having his own goal make him more focused and less keen on the idea of crying on his miseries, that's what Shirley taught him.
Shirley, that by now managed to escape the guards, reaffirmed her desires for revenge.

Volumes 3 opens with Cestus sulking over his teacher's scarred back.
He thinks of Demetrio, who turned his proud teacher into a crippled and swears that someday he's going to kill the bastard.
Of course while thinking so, he starts crying >3> Zafar notices him and rushes the boy to train instead of wasting time acting like a wimp.

On his way out to the grounds, he notices a scary line of crucified people: they are the guys who tried to escape Valente's school to gain freedom; the cruel show is supposed to discourage others in doing the same.
Meanwhile, Lusca is kicking the ass of some guys; they are his seniors at the training school for grapplers.
They were jealous of Lusca's superiority and tried to teach him a lesson but promply failed.
When back at school, Lusca is asked by his superiors and trainers about it, and after hearing the boy's explaination for self-defence they just punish him to a 5 days suspension at home.
Lusca knows that he's not popular at all at school because of his strenght, but he bears with it, not expecting anything from people.
He's actually glad to return home for a bit, so he can spend some time with his cute little sister Lucrezia, who just loves her older brother, and most importantly with his most beloved Valeria, the girls he likes and a childhood friend ♥

The two are pretty troubled: Lusca is sick and tired of hearing his teachers how much he resembles his father Demetrio, the man he hates the most, and Valeria is having her troubles too: her father thinks only about work and her mother is already dating another guy.
Fortunately they have each other to count on ;3;

Meanwhile the other members of Demetrio's group, the famous "Imperial Defense Troop" of the "Imperial Legion for Grappling" (I don't really know how to translate that properly XD) is back from some serious business missions.
This group is formed by the strongest warriors and each one is a lethal weapon with the duty of protecting the Emperor and all the members of the imperial family.
Beside Demetrio and Lusca, they are:
The vicecaptain Draisen, the pretty boy with the ponytail, a sort of brother for Demetrio; the assistant teacher Dinodemo, the scarred instructor in Lusca's school; the Imperial soldiers 1st grade Solleon and Apollonio; the Imperial soldiers 3rd grade Dedalo, pretty boy Adone, Cassandra and Edda and finally Imperial soldier 4th grade Roxane, who we already met as Nerone's bodyguard and music teacher.
The next chapter opens with Demetrio burning down the war chest gained by the soldiers in front of them: the pride of a warrior is the real treasure, and victory should be the only longed payment.
Demetrio is pretty passionate about his duty and he's extremely proud about his strenght.

Draisen remembers when they were younger and how he always looked up to Demetrio's determination and assertiveness... After all these years, he can't really believe that there's a person that Demetrio never managed to properly defeat-- And that's Zafar, Cestus' teacher.

Today the boys of Valente were asked to train with the guys from the training school for grapplers, the place attended by Lusca himself.
Unfortunately, since the school is an elite for boys from noble families, they're just supposed to act like punch bags for the little assholes ;_;
Cestus is forced to take part in a fight too, but he managed to avoid any damages with his impressive skills in dodging, making all the hits useless.
Next, Zafar is going to take part in one.

The other boxers try to stop Cestus for snapping at the bastards, but fortunately a guy is much more effective than him: Demetrio.
He notices the unusual spar and goes to drag his "old friend" out of it, snapping at Zafar for letting others treat him like that D: ! But that's it, Demetrio, after what you did to him, that's the extention of Zafar's current strenght: he can't even punch kids :/
Demetrio retreats and Cestus rushes next to his teacher: fun how he glares at Demetrio, despite him being the one who actually stopped the bullying XD
Demetrio is amused that the students decided to organize some matches by themselves, but he's curious to see how good they are and he decides to look at them.
The guys are shit scared, but since it's an order from Demetrio they can't really deny it.
Dinodemo has an idea to make things funnier: he sets a 5 vs 5 fight. If the five guys from the school will win they'll be promoted, if not they'll have to leave.
The guys hesitate at first, then they realize that they have nothing to lose: the other boys are already covered with wounds and they already bet them up anyway.

..Unfortunately they don't know that Cestus is going to be their only opponent and he's going to kick their ass properly.
During the fights the other guys from the Imperial guard manage to fanboy on Cestus; Demetrio remembers of the first time he saw Zafar fighting and Cestus remembers of the hard training with his teacher.
Cestus defeats 4 rivals by himself, but the assholes managed to get Lusca to fight for them.
They drag him to the school telling him that there was a brawl, but they just wanted to have their ass safe.
Despite always hating and avoiding Lusca they now rush to him asking for help.
Lusca is disgusted but he accepts the fight, if just to honor Cestus.
Also Demetrio is ok with it despite Lusca going against the detention... He's really curious to see the guys having a fight.
Cestus is pretty unamused by the idea of fighting against someone as strong as Lusca, but Zafar reassures him: since they're having boxing fights, Cestus has nothing to fear 'cause he is much stronger than Lusca at boxing.
In fact against all odds, Cestus manages to defeat Lusca because of his superior technique at this sport, since Lusca is mostly a pancrates athlete...

But is Lusca going to accept the fact that Cestus just defeated him in front of his father's eyes?
Something snapped inside of the boy and he attacked his friend with a mortal clench!
Zafar is terrified by Cestus getting hurt as he was back then, and everyone is shocked by Lusca going berserk like this.
Draisen manages to stop Lusca who can't believe what he just did to poor Cestus D:
The five assholes are forced to leave the school and Lusca is told to return home to finish his detention under the disgusted eyes of his hated father.
Cestus is left in Roxane's care and whines to Zafar about the limits of his skills: he can defeat Lusca as long is boxe, but he can't do anything against grappling? Zafar says that it's not just a matter of fighting techniques, but actual strenght: Lusca is just stronger than him.
Cestus is not going to buy it: Zafar was pretty strong too, but wasn't he just smashed by Demetrio himself..?

While crying over it, Roxane just notices that Demetrio is up to an actual demonstration of how an elite warrior is supposed to fight.
Demetrio goes against three full-armed warriors and just RIPS THEM APART.
The other students are shocked, and under Demetrio's invitation they just deserted the school...

The boys of Valente's school are still scared about Demetrio and are more and more hopeless about their future.
On the way back to the school, the boys cross another wagon filled with other guys who tried to escape Valente's school.
Cestus realizes that it's better fighting, if the result for a rebellion is getting randomly tortured-- The other boys have a fight with him: he can say that because he's talented, but what about average fighters like them? Their fate is going to die in the arena as slaves.

Meanwhile Lusca is getting home.
Lucrezia looks at her big bro's face and starts crying: he just left her to fight? Lusca comforts her, and asks about Valeria: Lucrezia told him that she got back home, 'cause she wanted to talk about something with her father.

..So, can you guess who's Valeria's father XD ..?

*anf anf*

..And that's it.
See you soon for more.
