Mad Men -- "Indian Summer"

I like some of the new shows, but none of them entertains me as much as this one. Maybe that's not fair, since this one is on Episode 11.

Synopsis ahead )

I know that Roger and Joan know that they are illicit lovers, but even in 1960 couldn't he do better than to say she was "the best piece of ass" he'd ever had? Cripes! I mean, he saved it by saying he didn't regret being with her, but ... jeez ( ... )

Agua di Beber," Astrud Gilberto

Here's the thing: I listen to this piece of music all the time. In fact, it was playing in the party suite back in May ( ... )

I love "Agua di Beber." I own it, too. I love how "di" is "zhee" in Portuguese.

He killed a whole season of Angel for me, and, like there, I think his acting is the worse of the bunch.
AmyCurl, I think he's supposed to be an obnoxious prick. I think the fact that he's getting under our skins suggests that Kartheiser is doing a good job. (I reacted comparably to Affleck in "Mallrats.")

-- Christina Hendricks was great in the "Can I kiss you?" scene, wasn't she? And my God, is she gorgeous.

-- I think they padded EM for this episode. Hollywood being the world capital of superficiality, I don't see her putting on that much weight while still trying to maintain her career.

Who needs the Electra-whatever when you have a washing machine? :-)
Heh. May I borrow your fan? ;-)

And, finally, the Jewish female friend swearing "Jesus!" at the revelation that the Goy is married. Fantastic.
That was funny.

Um....maybe. What's in it for me? ;-)

Oh, and I saw the suicide coming as soon as he dropped off the package. I don't know why--I just knew.

And again: what a frickin' prick. Do you think he'll use the contents of that package to blackmail Don?

It's interesting though, how he treats his mistresses and Peggy and the expectations that he has for his wife. That he can't seem to understand the changes she is going through, or want her to become more of her own person like the other women in his life are. There was something about the declaration of "his house:" she is just another piece of malfunctioning machinery in his house. And, unlike a machine wash repairmen, the analyst is taking too long to fix it. This disconnect is so jarring, because he just seems to get women in so many other ways.

See, I thought for sure the suicide was going to happen at the end of the last episode when we saw him. You knew nothing good would come out of that. He wanted his long lost brother... Don wanted no connection to his past.

Do you think he'll use the contents of that package to blackmail Don?
Part of me thinks yes. Now that Don has made partner, he thinks he should move up the ladder too. He is such SLIM.

Oh, I know. But when you've only seen an actor do obnoxious prick, it makes you wonder....

And the fact that I'm not even drawn into his prickish-ness (as I was, say, with Affleck in Mallrats or even Dazed and Confused) is where I'm talking about the acting being weaker.

The actor playing Don's face is so reactive--and playing against Kartheiser, he just blows him out of the water. Especially in the last scene, you could almost hear the subtext coming out of Don's face. :-)

Finally watched it. I love this show so much.

Yeah, I was disappointed in Roger for that line. It just didn’t feel right.

Did Roger's heart doctor fail to tell him not to smoke? Or do you think they didn't know that then?
I think he probably would have told him, but does Roger strike you as a man who would have listened? He stuck me as the type of man who thought he was invincible with all the drinking, smoking, sleeping around.

I like the way Don is mentoring Peggy.
Don Draper kicks ass.
I really like Don. Yes he does things that make you want to hate him, but then he could be so sweet. I like the relationship between Peggy and Don. From day one, he seems to have taken her under his wing. I like that he almost counteracts the influence that Joan has on Peggy.
