Shitty advertising methods.

There's a marketing technique I hate, which like the rest of them moved from print media to e-media with no problems.  I think of it as the fake referral, and it used to mostly show up in a hand addressed envelope in the form of an advertisement with a post-it note attached. The post-it would normally say "This seems like a great deal, thought of you when I saw it!" then an unintelligible scribbled address.  It's a good way to get someone to open a letter and take a second look at an ad, but my response has always been to discard it, even if it is interesting.  Tricking me into reading your ad is a shit way of making me have positive thoughts about your company.

So, I've had two emails from a local cleaning company, both of which were like this

hey guys

this is something cool and give this a good read

it's very cheap and

they visit to you at no charge at all

Thanx
then a PDF with all their details.  I started a snarky response, then rewrote it entirely, giving them a quick lesson on marketing, how they should introduce their company (I don't mind advertising if it's honest about what it is) and how they should go about getting a web presence.

On another note, I keep getting calls for SEO (search engine optimisation) services.  I always tell them that my company has an ad and three natural results on the first page of google for the most common search for our products.  One of them said "No you don't, I ran a search for car detailing and you don't show up at all!".  I told them I was very glad to hear it.  If you aren't aware, I make library supplies.
