A Scarred Tabletop

“Look at that, Mr Frodo.”

Frodo turned around, watching as Aragorn removed his surcoat revealing a fine lawn shirt made with evident skill.

“Who would’a expected that on so rough a man? It’s a pretty covering for a scarred tabletop, it is.”

Aragorn began laughing and turned towards the two hobbits. “Many things have I been called, but a scarred tabletop covered by my lady’s fabric is new. I’ll tell her when next we meet.”

“But why wear cloth so fine in the wild, Mr Aragorn, sir?”

“Wearing this I honor her love and her hopes, despite my darkest fears.”
