She looks out of her tower window across the reddening forest. The harvest is in full swing, the wheel of the seasons lumbering toward dormancy. A lone gull shrieks its slander at the foreboding sight of a small bent shape riding the stiff old pony to her front door. She cannot stop herself from gasping in sudden grief as the familiar book is handed to her, as the calm, distant voice of her father whispers the dreaded, "I'll be off now, Elanor."

She has lost him to the call of the sea. She curses it and its winged sirens forever.
