I've read the whole series, and they're very cute. Sort of between Artemis Fowl and Harry Potter in terms of reading level and depth of thought. As a teacher of Greek and Roman mythology in ninth grade, I wish all my students would read the series in middle school so that they would come in with at least a familiarity of the characters.

In terms of the movie trailer, I'm not impressed. First, they appear to have aged the character from fifth or sixth grade to a fourteen or fifteen year old. He's going to look almost thiry by the time they hit book five. Second, it's Christopher Columbus directing. Hello? He's the literalist who cranked out two kiddie movies of the first two HP books (as well as doing a mediocre job with the film adaptation of Rent). I'm sure it will be kid-friendly and make gobs of money, but I'm not counting that it will be a good movie.
