A/N: This is the first time I've ever entered a writing contest. Hopefully, this came out as good as I thought it did.

Paintings on the wall depicting every great fire lord for eight-hundred years filled Azula with admiration. Their stern faces and hard eyes showed that each one of them was strong, proud, and fully able to command a whole nation properly. She walked down the hallway drenched in fire, dancing with shadows, and studied the pictures. When approaching Fire Lord Azulon’s portrait however, a voice demanded her to stop.

Golden eyes like gleaming dragon scales stared downward. Even now his cold, ferocious power could be felt. Admiration slowly melted into desire and obsession. The Great Azulon, her grandfather from which she was named after, he was magnificent. Azula felt a need to bow before him, as if he was alive and waiting for the respect he so deserved.

Had he still been among the living, not a day would have gone by without her watching him from afar, studying and reflecting every mannerism and behavior he exhibited. Obsession turned into need.
She needed to be like Fire Lord Azulon. Wanted to be exactly like Fire Lord Azulon. Sadly though, there was only father and that would have to do. Not that father was a terrible choice to choose from, better than that good for nothing Iroh by a long shot. But still, what she wouldn’t have given to sit beneath his throne and feel that amazing power of his wash over her.

The flames throughout the hall twisted and flickered and quickly Azula was pulled from her daze. Azulon’s eyes burned as always. Deeply she bowed, a wicked grin molding each cheek higher.

Suddenly a squeaky voice echoed through the hallway. The flames twisted in disapproval.

“Azula! Hey Azula, where are you?”

Eyes rolling and a sigh at her lips, Azula headed towards the nuisance. Zuko met her halfway.

“There you are Azula; mom’s been looking for you.”

“I highly doubted it,” came her condescending sneer.

Zuko frowned. “Yeah well, what the heck were you doing anyways?”

Azula smiled and began walking away. “Oh nothing Zuzu. Come on now, mother will be upset if we keep her waiting forever.”

“Hey,” his voice hit an octave higher. “I told you to stop calling me that!”

“Whatever.” She waved at him dismissively. But before leaving, Azulon’s golden eyes flashed quickly across her mind. She’d uphold his name proudly like any good granddaughter should.
