During my first night at the Original Backpackers Lodge
I tried not to wake my two Swedish and one Singaporian
roommates as I escaped to the bathroom in the middle of
the night. As I walked outside to the protected outdoor
courtyard into the cold Sydney night, I hear an odd cry.
At first I thought it was a man, yet it was coming from
the trees! After explaining this to a woman at the Taronga
Zoo today she thinks I heard a cockatoo, a large, white
bird that is popular in Sydney.
Even early in the morning this city is energized. As I
sipped my warm cappacino from a local shop I saw young
Catholic schoolgirls with their British sounding accents,
pressed white shirts, and identical black stockings walking
to school. It is winter here. I know it by the way the sun
does not rise to the zenith of the sky but instead slinks
away in the afternoon. I know it by the way my cappacino
cools off in my hand only minutes after walking outside.
With my Sydney bus/rail/ferry pass, I can travel all week
for only $40 AUS. This morning I saw the lovely Sydney Opera
House illuminated by the brilliant morning sunshine as I rode
the ferry to the Taronga Zoo.
