Refugees and Humanitarian Aid
Two nights ago I saw the Anglina Jolie/Clive Owen movie Beyond Borders about refugees in war-torn countries. Since then I've discovered www.unhcr.ch, the United Nations website dedicated to helping refugees. In real life, Angelina Jolie is now a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN.
There are MILLIONS of displaced persons due to conflict around the world and I read that humanitarian aid organizations are frequently underfunded and politically undersupported once the media attention diminishes. Emergency help also does not solve the complicated political roots of violent conflict that leads to refugees in the first place.
We need better politics that lead to lasting peace, but how?
