I'm willing to bet that Nolan originally meant for Dick Grayson to be the reveal at the end but was probably pressured - either by the studio or by his gut instinct - into just flat-out saying Robin. Which, admittedly, has more of an effect in theaters than the name Grayson ever would. The audience I saw it with burst into eruptive applause when it happened, and I was in a theater of fanboys (we watched the whole trilogy in a row, complete with trivia questions during the intermissions, costume contests, free posters), so I think it was just a big crowd pleasing moment more than anything. As lame as it sounds when I talk about it now, it gave me massive goosebumps at the time. And that, coupled with the closing shot of Bruce's gadgets coming up out of water?? sdjkkjdsfjskdfjsf.
CATWOMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really did NOT expect Bruce/Selina to be endgame or for them to even be much of a romantic pairing at all because it seemed decidedly un-Nolan to be that on-point, but holy shit was it effective. And Hathaway and Bale have MEGA CHEMISTRY, which I also did not expect. Their big kiss at the end was another thing that got a major applause in my theater. I wish I could bottle up all of those reactions and replay them forever because there's nothing like experiencing epic shit in a theater with a bunch of nerds, IT FEELS LIKE HOME.
I saw the movie twice - once on Wednesday at a preview IMAX screening that I won tickets to and then again at last night's midnight screening (because I bought those before I won the freebies) and I liked it SO MUCH MORE the second time. The first time I walked out of the theater feeling a little jaded, like I liked it but wasn't gobsmacked or anything like I was when I saw The Dark Knight. But for some reason, the second viewing really pumped me up and I was just a mess of excitement throughout. It's a real testament to how slick the movies are that even 2 hours and 45 minutes moves by with ease, even when you watch it two days in a row. I wasn't even bored! I still have problems with it (there are a few cheap character moments, I really disliked Bane, some things happened a little conveniently, the Talia reveal was like "duh," who cares about Wayne Enterprises, etc), but I the harder I try to think of a more fitting ending, the more I come up empty. Like, even though I found it about half as perfect as The Dark Knight, it's still kind of hard to believe that a trilogy like this exists - this big, smoldering, beautiful, successful comic book hero trilogy directed by a world class champ. IT KIND OF OVERWHELMS ME.
(Whoops, I just wrote you a book. I came here specifically for your Batman reactions thanks to seeing that you liked Catwoman on Tumblr.)
Yeah, admittedly the Robin thing made me smile despite my bewilderment. Doofy, but effective in the moment. I liked Blake enough and his working with Gordon and Batman made the ending obvious enough that it was really cool when it came around.
I totally feel you on the theater full of nerds feelings. The few times i've been to massive midnight showings where everyone is SUPER HYPED UP have been some of my favorite moviegoing experiences. It just makes everything better! The energy is infectious.
I, too, had NOOOO idea to what extent Bruce/Selina would... exist... Like i knew ahead of time that she kissed him in the masquerade scene (from a trailer? a promo picture? i know it was something official because i avoided spoilers like the plague) but in one of the trailers i very distinctly saw Marion Cotillard and Christian Bale making out so i KNEW there would be a Bruce/Talia situation and figured that would be the focus with Catwoman just the costumed shenanigans bro. So the fact that they worked together so well and had a BIG KISS and ENDED UP TOGETHER was like !!!!!!!!!!!!!! In retrospect i should have known no matter what form Bat/Cat took in this movie i would love the shit out of it, but somehow i was still surprised. Such good costumed asskicking! Such good chemistry! Such good faces!
In my experience, second viewings are ALWAYS better. Like the first viewing is always sort of mind-reeling, i-don't-know-what-to-think, SO MUCH PRESSURE!!!, and then the second time around knowing what to expect allows you to relax and enjoy things and let your reactions set in. I'm looking forward to seeing it again!
(and no worries, i like long comments! i rarely discuss things more than a sentence at a time these days because tumblr is so annoyingly unaccommodating for commenting and replying to stuff.)
This is like mostly unrelated but I just found this picture on my Tumblr, which I'm fairly certain is from way before Hathaway was even cast, and it's perfect.
I also remember reading a blind item a while back on some stupid celeb gossip site about how they allegedly had an affair on set and as sure as I am that that's untrue, the prospect of it makes me feel horrible in that I don't hate it.
Haha going back through all my old celebrity picture folders is funny because they're alphabetical and with how i name my files "Anne" always ends up next to "Bale," so i have folders from like four years ago where all the pictures of them are grouped together. CONVENIENT!
