Well it was... alright! I guess! I dunno. A) I didn't get myself pumped up enough because i haven't had time to go back and rewatch the series or anything, and B) i was never that impressed by the trailers. Although last night upon the 1640816526358265th time seeing a commercial for it, it was a new one with KISSING, the KISSING from the same lighting and environment conditions as that pretty pretty forehead-touching promo picture, so that got me kind of more excited. KISSING!
Anyway. So like, all along we knew it was gonna be a MOTW movie, and that's fine, whatever, that's a huge part of the X-Files, most of the best episodes are MOTWs. But the thing is, a movie seems like it should be larger scale to me. I friggin LOVE FTF and it accomplishes nothing except for killing Well-Manicured Man. But it's GREAT. The epic conspiracy shit is great, the music is great, Mulder and Scully are gorgeous and great, it's got SO MANY BEES! Evil ones! Who interrupt kissing! And Mulder smiling into the snow after the spaceship flies away which is one of my very favorite teary-eyed moments in XF history! Who the fuck knows how they got out of Antarctica! They walked!
...In any case, FTF is huge and awesome. This was just like... weirdo science crime. Thematically and plot-wise it was well-constructed, but somehow it felt sort of meek after all these years. I did love seeing Mulder and Scully again though, of course. And SKINNER! Oh man the whole time i kept wondering if anyone else we knew would show up, and then that bald head popped in and i was like "YES!!!!". Aww. Cradling Mulder in the snow. Mulder always needs to be cradled in the snow in these things, apparently.
Billy Connolly is so cool. I kinda liked Amanda Peet and then she died a horrible unnecessary death. (tracking shots on people's faces as they fall to their doom: super lame. also it didn't need the impalement. hint: she would have died anyway.) CALLUM KEITH RENNIE!!! I had known he was in it but i forgot again. So since i've been watching so much goddamn BSG lately, i totally solved this movie as: the fleet got to Earth a long time ago, and the Cylons hid themselves in Russia, and this Leoben is like the last one left, and all the Cylon technology is gone and they can't resurrect anymore, so he came up with this wacky body-switching experiment as a substitute for resurrection, and it's pretty crude but at least they've got a tank for it. Also Priestess Elosha was the final Cylon and one of them is pretending to be a doctor a la the Simon model. ~*~THE END~*~
Okay, a major positive: i think i loved this movie entirely for the underwater shot in the public pool. It was SO PRETTY and cool and it's not until so much later that it all comes together that... HE WAS LOOKING AT PEOPLE WITHOUT THEIR HEADS. Amazing. The whole movie was quite pretty, i'll give it that. Sooooooo snoooooowy and so much blue and white! All the heavy snowstorm scenes where they were investigating just made me think of it as The X-Files as Fargo. <3
The theme song whistle on the close-up of Bush's portrait: AWFUL. Oh Chris Carter. You try so hard. He even put himself in the movie, i saw that. I also caught the names in Mulder's phone, "Bowman, Gilligan"... cute. The shout-outs to the show were kinda neato (if also entirely obvious anvils of fanservice... fanvils, you might say), just cause, HA HA I DO REMEMBER ALL THOSE THINGS THAT YOU ARE MENTIONING, THANKS! The pencils on the ceiling made me laugh, for sure. And aw, Clyde Bruckman. :*( Question, though: Mulder's still hung up on Samantha? Seriously? He was healed! By the starlight children! Set to Moby! I mean i get that he's spent so much of his life feeling guilty and sad about Samantha that it's not really something he can rid himself of completely, but i thought he'd moved on. I'm glad they didn't make a bigger issue out of it than they did, it just seemed out of place. Like way outdated. Like... hey remember the tv show. Mulder lost his sister.
Ha ha i totally enjoyed mountain man Mulder. Crazy bearded guy! OH GOD you know what the first weirdest thing for me was though? MULDER LIVING IN A HOUSE. It was bizarre! I don't know how to view him outside of Apartment 42! That was nuts to me. A house. Mulder in a house. Whaaaaaaat. He didn't even have a BEDROOM until season six. NUTS.
Isn't it interesting how neither of the movies features the basement office? Poor basement office. I wonder what's down there now. Probably boxes.
I'm still kind of confused about what the status of their relationship was between the end of the series and the beginning of this movie. Like we all got the impression from the trailers and stuff that they were kind of estranged which is just wrong considering how the series left them, and i wanted to knoooow how they ended up apart. And when Scully first went to see Mulder in the beginning it was like she was visiting a friend whose house she goes to occasionally. But then later on it sounded like it was THEIR house, together? Because Scully was "leaving" and junk. And the bedroom scene with them made it seem like something they do all the time, but also kinda like they just fell into an old pattern. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. You would think that that of all things would not be a mystery surrounding the events that occurred in this movie. And yet that is what i am confused by. Stop STILL being so vague about relationship things, you goofballs! Jesus christ, it never ends. THEY HAD A KID TOGETHER, I THINK THE SECRET IS OUT.
Anyway though, the bedroom scene, right! Adorable! Scratchy beard! AWWWWW. I knew he was gonna go shave then. Of course. Oh Mulder. Duchovny looked surprisingly good with his shirt off, i was impressed. But then i shouldn't really have been surprised seeing as
leucocrystal keeps us all up-to-date on the physical status of Duchovny.
Hmm, what else. I dunno, obviously the whole thing was Mulder trying to get Scully to be his partner and her being like "DENIED", but it was still disappointing there wasn't more Moose and Squirrel AS Moose and Squirrel. Oh and Scully does her highly technical stem cell research with Google. Hey Scully! You stole my research technique. I did LOVE Mulder running flat-out after Leoben. That was dramatic and awesome. Aw, Mulder running after things! I remember that! Surprisingly he did not give chase to any automobiles. Just keep running buddy, one day you'll be able to catch a car! ONE DAY.
Solving the crime was stunningly anticlimactic, i thought there'd be SOMETHING more to it than "we found them! stop right there! THEEEEE EEEEEEEEND" But wow, that's really all it was. Huh.
The special credits thingie was cute despite being cliched happy ending #137218901.
HEY WHAT'S UP WITH THE BLUE GLOWING FLOATING PERSON IN THE PROMOS. That wasn't in the movie, it looks more paranormal than anything else that happened. You know aside from head-swaps and psychic bleeding eyes.
Oh, oh, that one lady agent at the FBI (imdb tells me "Special Agent In Charge", AH YES OF COURSE) there were a couple of shots of her that just seemed like... why are you showing her to us. I kept thinking she was going to DO something or be evil or whatever, and i recognized her and it was bugging the hell out of me that she was maybe in an episode, like the one specific thing i could think of was the crazy lady in Schizogeny but i figured i was wrong... and yeah she was totally the crazy lady in Schizogeny. And i recognized the kidnapped girl too, and apparently she was in Rush! So! Yeah! Like remember when Krycek was in Genderbender before he magically showed up as Krycek! LOLZ guest stars.
WOW I HAVE SUCH DEEP AND INSIGHTFUL THOUGHTS. I just... wish i had taken better advantage of fannish excitement for new X-Files. NEW THINGS! That's crazy! I know for basically all of us who were in XF fandom it was pretty much baby's first fandom and that's such a monumental thing. X-Files was the singular reason i started making fanart, it's the first fanfic i read, the first message boards i went to, goddamn it's how i discovered what SHIPPING is. Didn't X-Files INVENT shipping? I bet the NoRomos are rolling around in their graves. ...I mean. What. Man now i REALLY just want to go back and rewatch the show and the first movie and relive the '90s. Sigh. I've still never seen the last season except for its season premiere and series finale. Post-s7 is when i stopped caring, unfortunately. But the OLD days! Heck yes!
Well, to sum up movie feelings: i'm unimpressed. Buuuuuut, Mulder and Scully! Filmed in Canada! Prettiness! Files! Lots and lots of files! ...Okay there weren't even lots and lots of files but i had to quote something classic, you know.
