Yeahhhh... I purposefully didn't read the book until after I'd seen the movie, because I was sure to be disappointed, and even I was confused by the ending. It was just so RANDOM and ABRUPT. It didn't feel like a proper ending at all.

But you did it wrong! You're supposed to read the book FIRST so you can imagine it all properly so at least you got it right before the movie came along and screwed everything up, plus it makes it more exciting to see on screen. Even though they screw everything up.

Then again, you're lucky you only had to feel confused at the end instead of feeling confused AND having your spirit crushed knowing the awesomeness they left off that you were EXPECTING TO SEE. UGGGGH.

I was ranting about the ending as I came out of the theatre as well. The consensus seemed to be that 1) it would have been too damaging for kids to see Roger killed. They didn't even show Billy Costa dying...though they did have Iofur's jaw being ripped off, and 2) they are only making the next two films if this one does well, and if this ends up being the only film, it makes sense to have a happier ending.

That being said, poo. I hope they use a different director if they make the next two.

I've been saying almost the exact opposite! If it ends up being only one film, it's one film WITHOUT AN ENDING. And if they end up making the other movies, then they've got the end of Golden Compass at the beginning of The Subtle Knife? That's so dumb! The climax doesn't belong as an intro! Either way it's screwed up. :/

It could have been so great. And then it wasn't. And then after all that i didn't even get to see the part i was probably looking forward to the most.

I haven't seen it yet, but just from watching the clips I know my most irrational hate is Pan's voice. He's just so.. LOUD and chipper and kiddish. I mean I know they're little, but Pan is like, her conscience, the voice of reason that only she should hear? He can be young, but there's also a level of seriousness there. I don't really know how to explain what I mean. I guess I'm just afraid the connection between human and daemon is totally lost in translation. What did you think?

I actually didn't mind Pan's voice because i didn't want them to make him sound TOO old/serious. Except you're right, he's a little too kiddie sounding. More like a pestery younger sibling than an exact equal to Lyra. The thing that bothered me most about the human/daemon representation was that Pan was running alongside Lyra asking her what she's doing or where she's going or whatever. Like... huh? THEY SHARE THOUGHTS. THEY ALWAYS KNOW WHAT THE OTHER IS DOING. Just like i'd feared, you can't really tell from the movie how essential the connection between a human and their daemon is and how awful it would be to separate them, despite being told that a daemon is a human's soul. You just don't get the qualitative experience you get from the books and Lyra's POV.

Oh my god, after i made this post and left, as i was driving i actually convinced myself that maybe i got a bad theatre and they somehow missed the last reel even though they showed the credits. I was SO CONFUSED and driving myself crazy until i was able to check the internet and confirm that the ending was really truly excluded for real. They showed things from the end in the trailers! Obviously they MADE that part of the story! I didn't understand how that stuff could not be in the movie! Uggggggh.

As cool as it is initially to see the things you imagined, they never ever get it right. You always feel like they could, like it wouldn't be that hard to capture things as awesomely as they are in your head, but no. It's so depressing.
