This is an unusual post for me. I'm about to advertise a product. Not something I built either. I recently decided I needed a new portable audio recorder. My last one, a Tascam DAT, worked well, but I wanted better audio quality than a DAT and smaller size. After careful digging I found the
M-Audio Microtrack 24/96. I've had an M-Audio sound card for awhile now and it's great, so I decided to go for it.
M-Audio impressed me with this. Not does it record beautifully, but though the device came with a CD it needs no drivers. On the CD I found the manual and a copy of the GPL'd audio tool
Audacity. The unit's drivers are self contained. I plugged it into a windows box, it just worked with nothing to install. Same with Mac, and surprisingly, linux. It just worked.
In a world of iPods and other audio crap that doesn't even work on other peoples computers, this is fantastic.
Bravo M-Audio.
