So I don’t know if you know this, but me getting all dressed and showering and made up to go out to dinner and for drinks and ending up eating, I kid you not, *hot dog pizza* instead is pretty much the definition of hilarious.
That’s how my Easter Sunday ended, though it began on a much lovelier note. I had planned on sleeping off a slight hangover through all the Easter services today, but when I woke up at ten and couldn’t go back to sleep it was obvious someone (wonder who?) had other plans for me. I threw on some church-appropriate clothes and went to see what was going on at the duomo. What was going on was a huge Easter Sunday mass that I’m so glad I ended up going to. It was nice to feel a part of the community that may have mixed feelings toward me and my American buddies in the café or in the street but still has to wish us ‘pace’ in church.
The other really nice thing about the service was that I could understand almost all of it, I’m guessing since the language hasn’t changed much from the time when it had to be simple enough for the illiterate to understand. Some of what I did understand though was really poignant about Sunday not just being ‘the weekend’ or another day off from work/school. It’s a day for us (/the Lord, whichever you choose) where we can recharge and reflect and regroup with our families and friends. I had woken up in a bit of a mood and felt much better after the service, though I had to stand in the back of the cathedral and couldn’t see much.
The rest of the day was quite fabulous I have to say, which is why I’m not even that upset about how it ended, with the said hot dog pizza. I met up with a few of the other girls that went to the same mass and we overstayed our cappucino’s by about two and a half hours enjoying some of the first real sun. By the time we got up and walked to another location it was lunchtime, though I just had a beer and some salad. By the way, that caprese salad, mozzarella cherry tomatoes and basil, has changed my life. Then Rose and I went back to the duomo and rehydrated in the shade at yet another cafe while the other girls went to the aquarium. The last stop was our new obsession, the Indian jewelry/scarves/amazing store where I got a ‘kashmir pashmina’ in a gorgeous pink for 3€. I’m also obsessed with the light pink abalone/clamshell (not sure which) and silver jewelry. That’s pretty much where everyone’s gifts are going to be from, especially my favorite beaders!
I’d rather not think about how much time I spent on the phone today only because of the bill I’m quickly accruing. But it was great to talk to my mom and dad and my grandparents and Joy and Logan and Mandy! Wow. My grandparents were just tickled pink (their words) to hear from me, even though it was just for two minutes.
So yeah, thought they were pepperoni. Nope. Straight up hot dog slices on pizza. I couldn’t bring myself to eat them together; I had to eat the hot dog slices and then the rest. And if I do say so myself, if a slice of hot dog pizza can’t ruin a day, it was a pretty darn good day.
