I just had my first fully hot shower in a week, and even then I was lucky to get out before it turned to ice cold. But I’m not complaining, it’s seriously pretty great here. Especially now that I have a phone that works and can connect to the outside world. Internet is still being worked out, but this weekend is going to be massive resting time for everyone. No business from now until Tuesday.

We’ve quickly found that living in Ortigia, the small island off the mainland of Siracusa where (most of) our apartments and the school are, is like living in Disneyland. Everything is gorgeous, no doubt, but everything is more expensive. The farther you walk inland the cheaper everything from gelato to coffee to shoes gets. The small market near the school had become necessary for survival on prosciutto sandwiches and water bottles.

Speaking of food, I bought some amazing looking gnocchi at the store; they’re proscuitto and mozarella flavored, or at least I think so. Once I get up the courage and some matches I’ll try out the gas stove.

I got my first taste of the nightlife last night; we went to a bar where there was live blues music and a ton of locals. I think I’m still trying to strike a balance between being friendly and inebriated, but practice makes perfect.

My mission for the weekend is definitely to take more pictures of this lovely place, and maybe to find the best canoli on the island.
