I am curious as to why people feel that when, in discussion with one another, rather than empathize with another's misfortunes/problems, they would rather try and compete in the sense of attempting to have it worse off...This type of mentality is what creates such a negative outlook in so many aspects all of the time ( Read more... )

ouch doesn't even come close to describe it... anonymous March 20 2005, 07:43:21 UTC
life's a bitch ain't it? This entry made me feel a various set of emotions, all at the same time (maybe its the fact I am a woman...no just kidding. that was a sad attempt for a joke) and I'm not exactly sure how to express them in this comment, nor do I feel that they should be expressed to anyone but you, because I feel that you deserve to hear them directly from me, and not from a post on the internet...

But what I am willing to say here is this: yes, you are completely correct...everyone, myself included, needs to learn how to place their own problems aside to just LISTEN to a friend. We are not all in constant competition, so why try to always outcompete each other...there is no prize to the person who has it "worse off." Obviously if someone is bringing their problems to you, they need your help, or just support...and it's not fair to them to try to show them you have it worse off.
Just listening to someone helps so much...more than I could ever express in words...and just think. When someone is willing to open up to you and talk to you about their life...just realize how privileged you are to be the one they chose to open up to. You get to see a part of them no one else sees...and I for one would feel privileged and special to have someone chose me as the person they would like to open up to.

Also, I am sorry you feel your life is out of your control pete...and I have to say from listening to you discuss it with me on multiple occasions, I completely agree...the choice is made for you, which is something that hurts me to even imagine or think about. And I know personally how hard it is to not feel alive...and Im sorry you are not able to all the time...it's not an emotion that should we should be deprived of. In the end, all we have is to look back on the times that we have felt alive...and I hope that your future will be filled with that feeling, because it is not fair for such a wonderful and amazing person to be deprived of such an amazing emotion, especially when you need it the most.

And this leads me to the fact that sometimes life does feel like "the longest form of suicide"...and when you think about it, it really is. "As soon as your born, you start dieing...so you might as well have a good time" and I'm sorry that your life forbids you from doing so. I truly am.

And thank you to adam for making me laugh out loud with his wonderful extended metaphor. He is definitely a keeper, and I'm glad you are surrounded by such supportive and wonderful people like him...I think sometimes all we need is a friend to make us laugh...laughter is truly the best form of medicine. Thanks adam, whoever you are, you rock!

I apologize for the length of this comment...but I feel everyone needs to hear it.

You are amazing pete, and I know you'll be able to pull through this feeling. You wouldn't be feeling it if you couldn't handle it...

<3 the girl who always calls you sweetcheeks

There is no such thing as "worse off". Everyone has their own issues and when you average them all they even out. Plus, you can't base life on how u feel all the time, sometimes u have to take each day as it comes to you.. that's how you obtain your feeling anyhow, now isn't it? so... thaz my lil' opinion on the topic. well, lyl, have a g'mornin (3:03am), Ronit
