Egregious abuse of antibiotics is becoming the standard. Does it surprise anyone that the facilities known for uber-germs are the same facilities that take strong measures to keep them at bay? By this I refer to hospitals and gyms. While we're at it, perhaps we should make farms breeding grounds for uber-germs too. That way, we can get exposed to germs that are both uber and foreign to human immune systems. On a slightly related note, it astonishes me, as a mathematical person, the way they only recently decided that drug cocktails are a good idea. It's really a basic concept. Suppose you have three D100's. You roll the first repeatedly until you get 100, then you roll the second until you get 100, then you roll the third until you get 100. On average, you finish in a few hundred rolls. Alternatively, roll all three dice repeatedly until you get 100's on all three. Good luck finishing. In essence, it converts the expected time from O(1/p) to O(1/p^3). In the real world, p << 1/100 and cocktails can use more than three drugs.
"Moderate" foreign to Neocons. Heaven forbid that a GOP candidate take a position other than categorical ban on abortion and gay marriage, or the banning of bans on guns, or any stance on a nontrivial issue more specific than family values. States' rights, except when states do something the national party dislikes. Woe unto them. Paleocons need to take over the party again, so elections can be between two reasonable candidates.
Who needs planet earth? We're so busy spending billions putting the most trivial science in orbit, we couldn't possibly do anything to slow down global warming, pardon me, "global climate change." The audacity of the Bush administration extends only to the War on Terror. Why not try, and perhaps experience some
failure, at something supported by everyone who isn't blind? Incidentally, FTWFTW.
Bush NOT deaf, hears about Katrina. Interesting. I always thought the speed of sound was such that Bush ought to hear about an event on the Gulf Coast within hours of it occurring. Close to $100,000 in federal money has been allocated per person, enough to put anyone back on their feet. Lots of middle men are hoarding the green stuff, reluctant to distribute it as has been requested. Say, perhaps we should outsource the reconstruction to China - they've been growing mighty quickly and at nominal prices, have they not?
Just a brief sampler of my current political thoughts.
My last three weekends have been incredibly unproductive schoolworkwise, instead being dominated by COMAP, sickness, and HMMT, respectively. This one has been marginally better, though as you can see I am currently battling the puntingness. I missed the Pour House mob yesterday, nobody came to notify me of the departure despite my having expressed interest in going. So I went to the Z-center instead. And, in a bit of good news, I managed 255/245 on my favorite exercises. Those numbers up from 135/165 as of three months ago. Not too shabby. Yay for being 20.
