Boxing Day, 2007

Dec 26, 2007 22:43

Robbie and I stayed close to home today. I browsed through the flyers about all the big sales that are on everywhere, but we decided we didn’t really need anything, so our only outing was a walk to the local coffee shop.

By the way, for those of you who are not familiar with Boxing Day, I refer you to the Wikipedia entry: Boxing Day according to Wikipedia

Of course, in these egalitarian times, the original sense of Boxing Day is by and large lost. As a matter of fact, for many years -- starting back in the ’70’s when Uncle Mike P and I would drive up to his cabin near Morson, ON on Lake of the Woods on the day after Christmas -- Boxing Day was just a damned nuisance, an obnoxious holiday that prevented us from buying beer or liquor at the Morson Shopping Centre on the day we arrived from our long drive from Stillwater.

Of course, nowadays I am more appreciative of the history and tradition Boxing Day represents. And I certainly appreciate that it is one more holiday for most people at a time of year when holidays are most welcome.

When Robbie and I went for our walk, we were amazed at how quiet and empty the streets were. We weren’t complaining. It made our little 2k walk to and from the coffee shop very enjoyable. The frosty atmosphere had decked the trees, bushes, wires and houses with that special winter beauty that you hope shows up once or twice a winter. Here are some pictures. Hope you enjoyed your Christmas and Boxing Day as much as we did!
