Slowly, she rose from her bent over position, hands clasped together as she raised them over her head. She could feel him watching her. It was all she could do to keep from grinning like an idiot. He used to do this all the time, when she first joined the Six Pack. Watch her from a distance. She was almost always aware of it, but she really never said anything. Back then, it was just part of being the new girl. Eyes and ears open, mouth shut. Then, once he started trusting her, she would tease him about it indirectly. 'I know what I'm doing, Cable,'

Every once in a while, she'd hear him mutter, 'You have no idea,'

But that was then. Now... well, now things were a little different.

"Enjoying the view?"

"Yes," he said, truthfully.

Dom was flirting.

She didn't have any idea.

He realized that he had no idea how to start this conversation. "Have you ever wondered," he said, "what it would be like to have a different life?"

"Well, Nate, I'm living with my boyfriend from the future on a metal island AND in a country he runs. I was pretty sure this was the definition of different," she laughed. She turned towards him and picked up the white towel that she'd thrown on the weight bench, wiping her face free of sweat. She smirked and took the few steps that seperated them.

"Thinking about life changing experiences, Nate?" It wasn't until she looked at him, though. REALLY looked at him, that she sensed something was off. He was... serious.

Serious Nate generally involved long periods of time when they didn't see each other.

*Nate?* She hadn't meant to be that hesitant. But her mind was already cycling through the worst possible scenarios.

Nate sighed.

"There's no good way to say this. Maybe you should sit down. No. Wait."

He stepped toward her, put his hands on her shoulders, and said, "You know I love you. Right?"

He leaned in to kiss her.

"Wait. You told Irene before you told me?" Her voice had gone deathly calm. She realized that maybe this was not the right time to get all petty about his relationship with Irene. Maybe this was not the right time to be jealous about the fact that Irene had gotten to talk to her supposed kid before her. But she was. Very.

"If she's related to me at all, she's probably pissed at you," The sarcasm was easy. It rolled off her tongue without a second thought. Never mind that her mind was spinning with what all of this could mean.

"You said, she was confused about her dad. If Logan's not her dad..." Her eyes closed, and a small bitter laugh came out of her.

"Well... I can honestly say I never thought this would be something I'd have to deal with. So how does it feel to have another child, Nate?"

"I sent Irene to check her out. I wasn't sure she was legitimate. I thought it was. . .ahh, someone. . .playing a joke at first. How would you feel if I'd told you this and it was a false alarm?"

"Honestly? A lot better if you would have trusted me with it, instead of Irene. You had someone claiming I was their mother and it didn't behoove you to let me know? Jesus, Nate! You know, there are things you don't know about me to this day. What if I'd had a kid and just never mentioned it? Gave the kid up for adoption when she was born?" She hadn't. And she knew she was overreacting. It didn't stop her from pushing the issue.

"What if she IS Logan's? Are you going to hate her like you hate him? And if she's yours? Are you going to turn a blind eye to anything she does because of it? Don't you get it, Nate? You don't know her. I don't know her. This... this is not my child. And she isn't yours, either ( ... )

Nathan turned, at the same time Domino did, to see Beatrice.

Like Domino, he had no idea how much the girl had heard.

There were a lot of things that Dom had said that he wanted to reply to -- damn, he really missed that psi-link at times like this. It was not fair of her to allude to what had happened to his son Tyler (what Tyler had done, how Nate hadn't stopped it). Beatrice seemed like a sheltered little teenager; even considering her powers, she wasn't a major immediate threat to go to the dark side. The other statements were irrational but not entirely unjustified -- there were parts of Domino's past that he didn't know much about. And maybe he should have told her first, instead of defaulting to Irene's coolheadedness.

But no. Dom's reaction was just confirming that Nate's original instinct had been right. If anything, he wished he could have delayed the reunion longer.

"Domino --" He coughed. "This is Beatrice."
