Birthday dinner

I'm generally pretty bad with gifts. My intentions are good, but my timing is terrible. If I manage to get the gift to the recipient within the calendar year, I consider it a win. I resolved to do slightly better this year.

I've made it something of a tradition to treat Brandon to a nice birthday dinner (although the actual dinner seldom falls on the day of his birth). This year, we went to Andres Carne de Res in Bogota. Our guidebook called it "a party in a pinata". It wasn't far off the mark. The restaurant is three floors of kitsch, with waiters wearing butcher's apron, troubadours serenading you at your table, a 40-page menu, "honored guest" sashes, and a bag of sweets to take home with you.

The food was good (although the ambience trumped the food by far). Appetizers were a small fruit selection, toasted bread with delightful little sauces, and a mozzarella plate with tomatoes. Brandon had steak served raw to be cooked (basically, warmed) to his liking on a little hot pan. He loves his meat nearly mooing, so he was happy. I enjoyed my first ever capirinha along with a Mediterranean-style salad. Good...but not orgasmically good. Still, the night was pretty special, especially after spending spending most of the vacation budget-dining on Columbian set meals in little dive restaurants and cafeterias.

It was a lovely way to end the trip. We're hoping to still fit in a trip to the gold museum tomorrow morning before we pack up and head out for the long flight back home. This has been a phenomenal vacation.
