Luck

Honestly, I have such stupid good luck. For as many times as I lose things in my day-to-day life - keys, books, gadgets, cash, etc. - I'm usually able to recover them.

We decided to take a walk along a wooded trail just outside the in-law's house. I got warm at one point and took off my coat, which had my phone tucked inside a pocket. Hours after we got back, I went to my coat to retrieve my phone. It wasn't there.

I searched all over the house, but I knew in my heart that I had most likely flung the phone out of my coat somewhere on the trail. I took a flashlight and set down the road along the hill, but only made it about thirty feet along the trail before I decided that a)there was a pretty small chance that I'd be able to find a black phone on a steep trail in the leaves using a flashlight in the pitch dark, and b)the large things crunching through the brush nearby were probably deer, but could be mountain lions or possibly Ozark serial killers -- I wasn't prepared to find out for sure either way.

Brandon, my mother-in-law, and I set out again on the trail this morning to search for the phone. Brandon was convinced that the phone would be destroyed by the cold and the morning drizzle even if we did find it, but I decided to remain hopeful. We swept our eyes across the trail all the way up to the top of the hill where we had turned around yesterday to head back to the house. Just as I had resigned myself to not finding anything, my mother-in-law spotted the phone in a leaf pile right at the top of the hill. More amazingly, it wasn't damaged at all for sitting out in the elements for twelve hours - it even still had most of a battery charge.

I'd like to say that this mishap will cure me forever of losing things, but I'd be lying if I did. I just hope that my luck continues to hold out.

d'oh!, random
