I am writing a story for perverse_bang and it's an Hawaii Five-0 Steve/Danny Old West AU. (Yeah, I know. My brain is a scary, scary place, even to me.)

What did they use way back then for lube? Lard?

I know it doesn't matter all that much and I could just gloss over it. But my muses are insisting I include it.

Grease, Lard, Animal fat, pretty much the same stuff they used to lubricate their guns. My reference book even suggests moustache wax.

Let me know if you need any thing else I once upon a time wrote Magnificent Seven and Young Riders Fic, and have a couple of reference books giving details of everyday life in the 1860's.

Doesn't it seem like mustache wax would be too sticky and not viscous enough? Interesting.

(Does "everyday life in the 1860s include men having sex and lubricant thereof? Because that would be ultra-cool if it did!)

It doesn't but I have a text that has a chapter on Homosexual sex through history that did. Apparently the 'friction' aids the wax in becoming more of a lubricant than a wax.

Because when Danny finds the Moustache wax and Steve quite definitely doesn't HAVE a moustache... *mind wandering now*

I looked at the hawaii five o and was going to say: Vasoline but then I realized you're crossing it over into the old west. so even that hadn't been invented yet. Soooooo.... the other two replies are correct: Lard, moustache wax, animal fat, grease.

They would have used lard. Probably testing different animal fats to see what was most effective. That is if they had penetrative sex.

I suppose they could also use spit and their ejaculate, but I think lard would have been the best choice.

P.S. The type of lard, grease, ect used would also depend on their wealth and occupation. If they are cowboys herding animals... best bet is lard. They needed that grease/oil for wagon wheels and would rather steal from Cookie than let their equipment get damaged.

Lard is good. They'll be by themselves, on the lonesome trail. I'll probably start with mustache wax, since lou_c (above) said Steve could have it and Danny would wonder why!! Plot bunny within a plot bunny!!!

I'm sure axle/wheel grease would work but the idea of it is so disturbing to me, I don't think I could include it. I can be such a GIRL!!!
