Emily looked out the window and smiled as the snow fell quietly. She enjoyed the scenery for a moment and was thinking how peaceful it was outside when a loud screeching was heard and she saw a zip of red dash by the window. This was then followed by a succession of several more blips of color.
She headed out the door and excitedly called out. “Who won? Who won?”
Craig looked up from his notebook that he constantly carried around and grinned, “It’s not really a race, Mommy.”
She reached down and lovingly touched Kyle’s head and admired the way he also held a small notebook, always wanting to do everything Craig did. Her heart melted as he jotted down a note with his left hand and then carefully watched Craig out of the corner of his eye to see what his next action should be.
As the boys began dragging their sleds back up to the top of the giant hill, Emily called out, “Hey guys…where are Zach and Ryan?”
Riley answered, “They are over on the other side. Apparently we were bothering them.”
Emily shoved her hands into her pockets and decided to investigate and see what her twins were up to. It really was hard to tell knowing those two. She had quite a pair on her hands…one a genius, the other a mastermind and both loving to explore, build things, take things apart, and put them back together. She turned the corner of the building and stopped when she saw a structure that hadn’t been there an hour ago.
Hearing her footsteps, Ryan turned around and smiled, “Oh hey, Mom. What do you think?”
She stepped closer and crossed her arms as she pretended to be inspecting it. “I don’t know guys…”
Zach looked up at her with wide eyes, “What? What’s wrong with it? There can’t be anything wrong with the design…I calculated…”
She held up her hands, “Calm down Zach, you’re starting to sound like your Uncle Charlie. I was just going to say that I think you’ve outdone yourself this time. Come and get me when it’s finished. I can’t wait to see the end result.”
Both boys beamed proudly and gave one another a high five as Emily took another deep breath of the fresh air before going back inside. As a Christmas surprise, Don had rented a lodge in the mountains so that the kids could see snow and play in it and have a Christmas that they would always remember.
She smiled warmly when she saw him at the window with Sadie in his arms and she was waving at her brothers and laughing. “Look who’s awake.”
At the sound of her mother’s voice, Sadie turned and then looked to her dad with a big smile on her face. Don beamed, “We were looking for Mommy, weren’t we.”
She nodded and then reached for Emily. Don handed her over and sighed, “She’s all changed and ready to go play with her brothers. I was just waiting until she was a little more awake before I tried to suit her up. She’s not a fan of that snowsuit anyways.”
He leaned forward then and sweetly kissed her and Sadie moved to kiss both of their cheeks, wanting to be in on the action too. Emily’s heart was soaring and as she ran her hand lovingly over Sadie’s soft hair, she stated, “The twins are building an igloo.”
Don chuckled, an amused look in his eyes, “Charlie and I tried that once. We carved a hole in a snowbank…it didn’t work out too well for us.”
Emily smiled, “Yeah well…when I said building it…I meant literally. They are making blocks out there and constructing it using a blueprint that Zach made.”
Don’s eyes widened, “Where are they? I have to see this.”
She gestured towards the back door, “They are right outside there. Trust me…you can’t miss it.”
Don quickly pulled on his coat and looked much like a kid himself as he bolted out the back door. Emily could sense Sadie’s impatience with being inside while her brothers were basking in the glorious white stuff she spent most of her time investigating so she got her all suited up and the two headed outside.
“Ky!” Sadie instantly yelled.
He called out, “Over here, Sadie!”
She giggled as she made her way over to him and pat his back before turning her attention to her brothers who were still sledding. She pointed at one and called out, “Me!”
Emily grinned as she scooped her up and called out, “All right. Who needs a break? Mommy needs a sled.”
Seth piped up, “You can use mine. I need to get my hands warm.”
Emily then asked, “Danny…do you mind taking Craig down with you a few times?”
His eyes lit up, wondering why he hadn’t thought of this plan before and called out, “Craig, come on buddy! Leave your notebook there for a few minutes and come hang out with us!”
He carefully tucked the book away and then looked over and asked, “What about Kyle?”
Jake came up behind Kyle and scooped him up, causing his little brother to squeal playfully. “Kyle’s coming with me, aren’t you? He likes to hang out with the cool kids.”
Kyle gave his brother a high five and Emily gave the signal for them all to start their trek up the hill. When they all got situated, Seth called from down below, “All right! Ready….set….GO!”
Everyone let out a war cry as they started their sleds down the hill and after a few runs, the boys once again had to admit that they were quite impressed with their mother and her skills.
This boost to her ego gave her an idea and she huddled them all together and they began developing a master plan. A little while later, Don was finally distracted from helping the twins with their igloo by the fact that it was quiet. There was never quiet in the Eppes family unless everyone was sleeping.
He walked around to the front of the house and was surprised when he didn’t see anyone at all. He looked up at the hill and found that no one was sledding anymore either and a confused look graced his features. He put his hands on his hips and was getting ready to head towards the lodge when Emily yelled out, “NOW!!!!”
All at once, a hail of snowballs came from all sides, pelting Don and taking him completely off guard. Just when he was about to retaliate, Sadie toddled out to him and he knelt down as she smiled at him before turning to look at her mother. Emily nodded to her and Sadie turned back around and threw her own tiny snowball at her daddy before squealing and running into Danny’s protective embrace.
Don’s eyes widened as he stood up and looked at his family. “I can’t believe you guys ambushed me.”
His gaze then met Emily’s and he smiled mischievously, “This was all your idea, wasn’t it?”
He then surged forward and Emily squealed like a little girl. She took off running as best as she could in the snow and within seconds Don had tackled her, pulling her into the snow with him. She was giggling nearly uncontrollably now as he hovered over her and she found herself nearly buried in the snowdrift.
“GET HIM! We have to save Mommy,” Zach and Ryan called out in unison as they came around the corner to find Emily being tackled.
With yet another war cry, all of the Eppes children surged forward, some grabbing Don by the legs, the smaller ones climbing on his back. Don merely smiled down at her and sighed, “I love you.”
She beamed, “I love you too…”
Despite the chaos going on around them, Don leaned down and kissed his wife sweetly. In the midst of trying to save her, Kyle yelled out, “Ew!!! They’re kissing!! Let’s get out of here!”
Sounds of disgust filled the air as the boys once again dispersed and Emily couldn’t help but laugh. “You did that on purpose just so they couldn’t save me, didn’t you?”
He winked at her, “A man’s got to do what a man’s got to do. Saving you is my job. I can’t have someone else being your knight in shining armor, now can I?”
She beamed, “You’ve got some stiff competition, Eppes. These boys of yours…they’ve got good manners, they are handsome…and I think that they just might bring back the lost art of chivalry.”
He kissed her once more before helping her up and dusting the snow off of her. He then pulled her into his arms and sighed, “Do you think they are enjoying this vacation?”
Emily looked around before nodding, “I think they are all having the time of their lives…thanks to their Daddy. Most of all, I think they are happy to have you here and are happy that you will definitely be here tomorrow when they open their presents.”
He squeezed her, “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
He felt a tug then on his jeans and looked down to find Kyle, Craig, and Sadie there. Kyle asked, “Daddy, will you help us build a snowman?”
He looked down at their little faces all turned up in eager anticipation and his heart nearly melted as he lifted Sadie up and sat her on his shoulders as he beamed, “I’d love to! Let’s go!”
Craig moved over to Emily and took her hand, “You too Mommy…come on. It’s going to be a giant snowman!”
This…was the best Christmas that Emily could ever remember having and she knew it was one that she would never forget.
