It is getting quiet around here. I keep reading, but it occurs to me that maybe I should be posting more too.
1. We've been issued with notices at work saying our jobs could potentially be at risk. However when you look at the appendix it says that no one from my geographical area is being made redundant. This means (in all likelihood) I'm fine until April. Six months of job security is good news. :)
Dave's area lists 2 possible redundancies, but that shouldn't include him as they look to be part time posts.
2. We have done little more to the house. Decoration-wise the kitchen is the only room that seriously needs work. However finishing it requires buying more stuff and of course it's one of the essential, constantly-used rooms, so we're leaving it for now. In other parts of the house I'm noticing that the walls look a little bare, I think we need a few pictures around.
In the garden we now have a shed and a composter. The neighbours have been doing a lot of work on their garden and kindly cut back some of the trees at the end that overshadow both gardens. We discovered that the very back of the garden (which may not technically belong to us) has been used as a dumping ground by a previous owner, who apparently was a builder. Which may explain the piles of bricks. We cleared a load of the surface rubbish, but clearing it completely would require moving various bits of concrete.
My parents came to help us and we've now got one and a half borders clear and properly mowed lawns. The herbs we bought have been planted, I just hope they survive the winter. Dave got gardening equipment for his birthday, and with some spares my parents have we're now fairly well equipped. We've got an idea of what we want to do next (including a herb garden and some conifer removal), but won't worry too much about that until closer to spring.
3. Further staffing changes at work. A temporary member of staff is going elsewhere and next week will be her last with us. This is the best thing for her as she didn't really want to be redeployed to us in the first place.
Another member of staff is coming back from long-term maternity leave next week. It may take her some time to readjust, but hopefully her return will relieve some of the staffing pressure.
4. My mum is doing pretty well. She is still having herceptin, but that is likely to continue for months yet. She's just been working mornings, as afternoons make her too tired. Her stamina isn't really back yet, but she is doing plenty of things that she wasn't able to before. This is good as I think the forced inactivity was really getting to her.
