So today I am being pleased that people are actually asking me if I can do something I'm not actually paid/trained to do.
I am pleased about this because normally they just assume I should do it and pester me to do it and in some cases get annoyed when things don't turn out as they were hoping.

The thing is people don't understand why a place that offers computers doesn't also offer computer guidance/technical help/computer lessons/IT minions. And in certain cases I can see their point. However I also see that libraries are not computer rooms that happen to have books too. They are libraries that happen to have computers in, the books are our service and it is that usage we get judged on.
Library staff are not trained for computers (other than that which is work based), do not all have the same level of knowhow and are not allowed to do too much to the computers without trained IT people. I honestly agree with a superior of mine who said that when they introduced computers they should have introduced a dedicated computer staff member.
All true, sadly.
And have you noticed the most stressful customers are usually the computer users? I've had blissful days when they've been down. Well, except for telling people umpteen times that they're down, since obviously I might be lying or wrong the first (umpteen-1) times.
