I am not an IT minion!

So today I am being pleased that people are actually asking me if I can do something I'm not actually paid/trained to do.
I am pleased about this because normally they just assume I should do it and pester me to do it and in some cases get annoyed when things don't turn out as they were hoping.

I explained that I might be able to help as along as I wasn't busy doing other things (that I am actually paid for), and explained that lunch hours (12-2) are not best time to get help. The guy came in and wanting a fair amount of attention at 1pm (even though he'd said after 1:30 would be best).
Luckily I am on break until 1:30 hopefully by which point the problem will be sorted. If it's not I don't mind helping but I'm honestly starting to wonder if I'm going to get told not be so helpful, again.

I like being helpful and don't mind helping people (well unless they get arsy and even then I'm fairly tolerant), couldn't survive in this job otherwise. And being the member of staff who is fairly good with computer my colleagues do tend to turn to me for quick technical help. And I don't mind this. But it does take time away from what I'm supposed to be doing and some people recognise me as competent and will come to me for help the most.

The thing is people don't understand why a place that offers computers doesn't also offer computer guidance/technical help/computer lessons/IT minions. And in certain cases I can see their point. However I also see that libraries are not computer rooms that happen to have books too. They are libraries that happen to have computers in, the books are our service and it is that usage we get judged on.
Library staff are not trained for computers (other than that which is work based), do not all have the same level of knowhow and are not allowed to do too much to the computers without trained IT people. I honestly agree with a superior of mine who said that when they introduced computers they should have introduced a dedicated computer staff member.

But that hasn't happened and is unlikely to and so I am stuck with the above situation. *sigh*

Could be worse, I could be davegotsu.
