Dear Takamicchi, I loved your prompt during sign ups, but then life happened and I couldn't sign up. As soon as I saw it on my inbox, I knew that I had to write it. I hope that you enjoy the result I can give you a touch of Italy with this story. I would recommend reading it while listening to
50 Special by Lunapop. There's also
an English version Ciao Giulia,
You won't believe what happened.
I know you will.
That was Alberto. He thinks he knows everything, but maybe he's right this time. After the Easter vacation, I decided that I was done with school. I want to learn everything, but there's so much we can't learn in a classroom. So we decided to finally get a Vespa 50 Special.
When we couldn't get one in Portorosso, we decided to finally go on our trip. I left a message for Massimo or he'd have my hide when we go back. The trip itself was perfect. We swam all the way to Sicily.
Alberto is once again right. Swimming for so long, in open waters, without worrying about being caught felt really good. I didn't realize how much I missed swimming until we were midway through the country. We reached Sicily only a few days ago. We had to wait for the money we put away to dry (it's the downside of swimming) before we got ourselves a red vespa. We're sending you a picture with this letter. Expect a lot more.
Un bacione,
Luca
Greetings from Taormina
Ciao Giulia,
I hope you get these letters in a speedily way, but let's face it, with the way the postal service works, we'll probably get to Genoa before they do.
I'm telling him that you don't care about all of that and you want to know where we are and what we're doing, and the answer is HEAVEN. Taormina is amazing, and it reminds me of Portorosso, except for the really tall mountain.
What Alberto means is that Giardini Naxos are down at sea level. The beaches here are beautiful, but as soon as you turn around, there's a mountain and Taormina is up in the mountain, where you have all fancy clubs and restaurants. We've found jobs at two local restaurants. They pay well, but not well enough for us to find a place to sleep.
But we're a lot smarter than some humans. At night, we park our vespa near the Carabbinieri station, since no one is going to steal it there and we swim out to sea. It's very warm down here and we found a cave where we're safe.
Alberto has been decorating it for us. It's pretty cool. We do have to share a bed, but that's not that bad. We won't stay here a long time anyway, just long enough to collect money for the ferry so we can cross into Calabria and then off to Naples. I promise to tell you more about the clubs here (we have to sneak in because they are so expensive) when we see you. Until then,
un bacione,
Luca
PS We sent you a postcard so you can see Taormina.
Greetings from Naples
Ciao Giulia,
I've taken over the writing, because Luca never tells you about the important stuff. The pizza and the coffee really are the most amazing things in Naples. The desserts! I'm in love with them. You've never lived unless you've tried a baba'. We should try and bring something to Massimo, although they probably don't travel well.
They get even worse when our residence is yet another cave under the sea. We've decided that it's the only way that money can last for our trip. And of course, Alberto thinks that food is the most important thing.
We've met some very nice people here. They are very friendly. You say hello and they basically adopt you. We're having lots of fun.
They are also very crazy here. Did you know that there was a town called Pompeii, and everyone died when the volcano erupted? So what did they do? They built a new town called Pompei and people live there. Why do they still live by the volcano? I don't know about you, but I'd move somewhere safer. Like Portorosso.
Alberto will never be an adventurer, but that's fine. We love him anyway, don't we?
Luca loves that I can make a cave look like home, that's what he loves, but we've got to go now. We're meeting some friends in piazza and then we're driving to the beach.
Un abbraccio,
Alberto
Greetings from Rome
Ciao Giulia,
It's me again, Luca. We made our way to Rome. It's so big. Even with our souped up vespa, it takes forever to go anywhere. It's not like Portorosso where you can get anywhere in ten minutes. I suppose it's a bit like Genoa, only bigger. We've seen so many things here. The Colosseo is enormous.
Did you know that there's an entire country inside Rome? It's called the Vatican. It's so wild. We saw St. Peter's Basilica. It's huge. Everyone in Portorosso could live there and there's still be extra room. Also the food here is good too. I tried the amatriciana and it's to die for.
The most amazing fact is that Alberto hasn't gained a single kilo. With everything he eats, he should be bigger than your dad. We do spend a lot of time swimming. I don't think he likes the city life.
I definitely don't like the city life. I don't know how they live so far away from the sea.
On the other hand, I like it here. We can see so much, and then at night we can go to this secluded beach. We hide the vespa so no one steals it, and then we can swim, just the two of us. We have a new cave. We haven't even managed a single bed this time, so we share a little corner together. It feels safer that way.
What he means is that I will never let anything happen to him. We'll finish our trip and come and find out, and then we can all go to Portorosso for the summer.
I'll never let anything happen to him, that's what I meant. Anyway, we're off to see La Fontana Di Trevi. It's in the postcard we're sending you.
Un bacio,
Luca
Greetings from Livorno
Ciao Giulia,
We're in Livorno. We weren't supposed to be here. We were going to stay in Florence, but after two days away from the sea, I was feeling restless, so we moved here. Livorno is wonderful. We can take day trips and go to Florence and Pisa, but this way, at night, we can go to the beach.
Next time Alberto says that we should travel, remind me that what he means is that we need to go up and down the coast. He really feels bad in cities with no sea. Even the Arno wasn't enough for him, and that river is insanely big.
Not as big as the sea. There are a lot of beach clubs here, and we ended up working at one of them. You might think that it's insane, and it is. There have been a lot of close calls and we've had to cover for each other, but the clubs are so lively.
They also give us access to the sea at night. We can also keep the vespa in their parking lot and make sure that no one takes it (I know I've said it in the past, but people steal them a lot). When we don't want to go to our new cave, the club has little cabanas. They aren't meant for people to sleep in them, but Alberto and I can fit if we stay very close.
He's always on top of me!
Alberto doesn't really mind. He hasn't pushed me off once, and he doesn't complain too much when I suggest that we stay there instead of the cave. If this isn't true love- Our boss is calling us. We've got to go.
Un bacio,
Luca
Milan
Ciao Giulia,
I love Milan, but I don't think we'll stay here for a long time.
There's no sea here. No rivers either. You can't even smell the salt in the air. That's how far we are. It's terrible.
As you can see, Alberto really doesn't like it. We have found a little hostel where we can stay for cheap. We've saved a lot of money sleeping in caves, but we don't want to spend it all here, so that's another reason we aren't staying long.
There are some plus. People are really weird here. Their clothes are all fancy, like you see on TV, and… did you know that it's okay for two men to be together? I never knew.
You can't see me, but I'm smiling. It's taken a little for Alberto to clue in. The cave, the one bed, sharing a cabana. I didn't know what else to do, but then he saw two guys kiss and it finally dawned on him. You were right, Giulia; I should have told him straight out. It would have made this trip a lot more fun, instead he's figured it out just before we go back home.
Hey, we can have fun in Portorosso. I love that place.
I guess he is right, and I'm willing to give him this since he finally did kiss me, right at the Duomo, with all of the tourists around. I'll never forget it.
I guess Milan isn't so terrible.
No, Milan is definitely not terrible, but what matters is the company and I will love any town as long as I'm with Alberto. Anyway, we're on the way there.
Un bacio,
Luca
PS We're delivering this one in person.
