an executive summary

well. I have to write an executive summary...
The purpose of this is to offer a management person some insight into a document on which he can base his decision, I used a planning document original, and took all the information from it that I could, that might be useful. - if you spot any grammatical errors, spelling errors, or think that what im describing is totally unclear, please... drop a comment :) (the content is sorta tech savvy, so its quite likely that you might not understand all of if, but if, despite this, its unclear, i'd appreciate a comment :) )

VTI5-B2 Executive Summary of a planning document from VTI3.

An Efficient Java based Instant Messenger Application, for use under LINUX.

The Purpose of the project is to develop an efficient Instant Messenger program, or application, and its protocol for use in a professional setting, for the company Workline Nederland B.V. , part of Workline International. Executing the project will fall to the development team VTI3-B3.

The main aim will be to allow professionals to discuss or share ideas and information using text and files in an efficient manner. Additionally, if the network architecture installed at Workline can be upgraded sufficiently, a video functionality may later be implemented.

Regarding the professional nature of the Instant Messenger, Workline has requested that the users be categorized into groups, based on its company structure.

Workline will employ the application within a LINUX environment, mainly utilizing Open Source solutions. As a result the application to be developed must utilize a Sybase Database. Another key element of the Application will be efficiency in terms of user interaction and system resources utilization.

The Instant Messenger program should feature clients, providing the interface for the user, running on the LINUX based workstations. Alongside the clients a server will function as the central hub, interconnecting the clients.

Notable requirements:

Among other requirements set by Workline, most notable are the requirements of;

  • Each user having a personal ID and password, being part of a group of users from his own department.

  • The ability for users to send files to each other, an anonymous account for temporary use.

  • The implementation of a discussion system in which multiple users can simultaneously interact with other users.

There are several risks involved with the execution of this project. Internally seen the composition of the development team, which is new, can be considered a risk, as can the fact that most of the members have limited experience in programming. The fact the application will run in LINUX also poses a challenge.

Externally seen, possible risks are that the description of the project is insufficient, possibly leading to it being executed incorrectly, or perhaps that the network architecture in place at Workline has been wrongly assessed.

Conclusion:

Despite the risks involved, the findings have been that the project should be executed as was planned, seeing as the risks have been greatly diminished; having been identified and analyzed. On top of this, a rigid planning has been made, which will serve to monitor the progress on the development.

Recommendations:

Video Communication will not be feasible with the current network architecture, unless significant upgrading is done, it is therefore advisable to, if at all possible, invest into the upgrading or replacement of the network architecture that is currently in place.
