strange steps

Mixtape time! This started out as just a playlist of the songs I've liked the most over the past three months as I tried to sort how I'm going to spend the next 5-6 years of my life. My brain was dominated by confusion, nostalgia, and random moments of feeling unstoppable. Eventually the mix started to revolve around themes of beginnings and endings, comings and goings, and of being torn in multiple directions but eventually coming to peace with it all. Which is kind of a lot for eight songs. XD But yeah. Some of them are particularly special to me--I'll always remember lip-syncing along to "Twilight Galaxy" before I flew out for my first interview, and for a few weeks I was scared of listening to anything by The Submarines because their music brings back all my amazing memories from last summer, involving lots of people that I'm going to miss like hell.

It's note quite a graduation mix--more of a decision-making mix. So, enjoy, especially if you've just gone through a similar process of picking a college/grad school/job/whatever!

1.
20 Years of Snow - Regina Spektor
...But I gotta get me out of here.

2.
Celebration Guns - Stars
So tomorrow there will be another number,
For the one who had a name.

3.
Twilight Galaxy - Metric
Did they tell you, you should grow up,
When you wanted to dream,
Did they warn you, better shape up,
If you want to succeed.

4.
Bulletproof - La Roux
Tick tick tick on the watch and life's too short for me to stop,
Oh baby, your time is running out.
I won't let you turn around,
And tell me now I'm much too proud,
All you do is fill me up with doubt.

5.
Vote - The Submarines
We are scientists,
We will not be afraid.

6.
Ending Start - Metric
Gave them our reactions, our explosions,
All that was ours.

7.
The Youth - MGMT
The youth is starting to change,
Are you?

8.
Hysteric - The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
The cinders, the cinders.
They light the path.
And these strange steps
Take us back, take us back.

(PS: For your listening convenience, I've tagged all the songs with the mixtape name, and numbered the tracks so that they'll play in order. If you'd rather have the songs with their original track numbers and the names of the albums they came from, you can download them here.)
