Feel the warmth of your embrace...

Because apparently I'm strange and random like this:

After hearing about Prez Obama's intention to get rid of the don't ask, don't tell policy, I was tempted to text a friend asking if she wanted to get married and get my military benefits (j/k, as I know we're not there yet). That made me realize that I wasn't sure about PA's policy on homosexual marriage, so I went to look it up.

The first site I came across was another "defense of marriage" site. Of course, I grew indignant, so being my brilliant self, I had to email them.

Most people who argue the "defense of marriage" point do it for religious reasons. If that is your basis, it doesn't matter how strongly you support it, as it has no place in the US's separation of Church and State bit. True, I think individual churches should have the right to choose not to perform the marriage, as there it is definitely a church thing, but I believe overall, no matter your religion, it should not affect a state/federal policy.

Then there is the separate matter: of all the people who bitch about the degradation of marriage, how many people do something about it? Make marriage harder to obtain, educate people on marriage, have more churches urge classes before marriage, etc. Instead of constantly pushing for marriage, shouldn't there be someone or some organization pushing for education about marriage? I think the Catholic Church is one of the very few institutions that have any pre-marriage plan.

If you're so desperate to defend marriage, why don't you defend marriage instead of attacking someone else? Ironically, the same someone else who would probably have a greater respect for the institution of marriage than most married people?

rl, ramblings
